There's a nice looking AC 7045 near me for sale for $8900 with a ps tranny. The guy said that the only problem it has is that it seems to transfer some oil between the Tranny and the rear end I believe was the story. He said that he just equalizes it once or twice a year that it causes no trouble. I need it as a second medium size tractor to pull a planter or maybe a field cultivator sometimes. I've read about others having a similar problem but not what the fix would be or how immediately it has to be fixed.
My questions are, is it just a seal and is it really a small problem as he led me to believe. Would it hurt to run it like that this summer? What would it take to fix it if it gets worse?

Thanks guys.

First run, not walk, away from that AC7040!!!! It is over priced for the first problem. You can buy them all day around here for $4000-5000. That is with no problems. One with even a "small" problem will not bring much over scrap price.

Second that leak could just be a seal on the pumps but even that is a high labor fix. The much more common problem problem is it could be the seal and shaft on the transmission out put. These requires the tractor to be split twice: at the flywheel and then at the back of the transmission. You will very rarely find a good used shaft. They seem to all be undercut by the seal. The last new one I bought five years ago was $700 then. I bet that it would be a thousand now.
Now there will be many on here flame me for telling the truth about AC 7000 series. That series helped put AC out of business. They had problems from the get go. Engines needing overhauled at 3000-4000 hours and transmission problems. Plus to top it all of the worst cab entry ever made.
I would look around for a good IH 1066 or some other tractor. I have seen several IH 1066 in that price range. You might have to replace the torque but that is $1500-2000 repair and you will then get years of use. I am not even a IH guy. LOL You can also find 1070 Cases in the $9-10 thousand range too.

It is a pain in the rump to fix, but I'm having to agree with the other post. The price is way high for one needing that repair. There was a 7080 black belly that just sold for 6700 locally. It had new shoes all the way around, full weights, stadium lights, overall very good condition, but they aren't a high resale value tractor. I'm an orange fellow, but I prefer the 8000 series over the 7000 series.

The seal between those pumps usually does not just leak a little. Remember he is selling you a well known lemon, of coarse it is just a "little" leak. If it is the seal between the pumps when it totally fails it will pump all of the transmission oil into the rear end. If you don"t catch it soon enough it will burn the power shift clutch packs.

It seems that you really want this tractor. So buy it and try to get some type of recourse on the seller if it is a more major problem. You could very easily have a multi thousand dollar repair on this tractor. I just called a buddy that works at the local Agco dealership that was AC. Even he said walk away. He said it was not hard to spend 10 grand on these powershifts anymore. He says that they sell any problem 7000 series to the bone yard. They can"t afford to fix them.

Dang, I should have been there, I woulda bought that one, lol.
I was already leary of the AC's anyway, never been in one. I'll keep looking around.

Haha, well, I wasn't dead set on this tractor, I just need another tractor in that size range and it was in the right price range for me. That said I didn't know just how much of a problem they were though I had guessed there was a reason for their low resell value.
My gut feeling also was that the "little leak" was a BS story from a dealer sales person. I imaging he made a point of telling me about the leak so he couldn't be accused of non-disclosure of important info. I had serious suspicions which is why I asked you all here, I'm lucky you guys are all so helpful and knowlegable...seriously grateful.
I'll keep looking at other options or get by with what I have on hand.
Thanks guys!
