computer/routers

I have high speed internet and just bought a laptop and a router. The router seems simple enough but I can"t get it working. No problems at all when laptop is hooked up direct to internet line.
Any ideas? Thanks

Just went through this; have had a home network for several years; router quit working, so I bought a new one; it didn't work either, so it's obviously something else. I fooled with the whole system for weeks, checking connections, reintsalling drivers, etc. Finally bought another new router; DUH......the 1st NEW router was bad.

You might have to set up your router first, we did, hook it to your computer and run disc.

Yep. I JUST had high speed installed yesterday afternoon. The installer had to try two different routers to get one to work.

When I went to Verizon DSL I decided to make my home wireless, purchased a linksys router and hooked all up. It would not work, I called Verizon and after a process they did online called "bridging" through wire it works fine, they actually took over my system and I watched on my screen as they set it up. No problems since but if an equipment change is necessary I suppose it may have to be done again. mEl

Just got to thinking. The installer told us that if we moved ours or anything, make SURE we plugged back in to the correct port in the back of it. He said there are 5 ports that all look the same and the wire will plug in to all of them. Said it HAS to be plugged in to the gray one on ours (D-Link).

Could be a bunch of things... but try this.

Make sure the router is configured to do DHCP - it should be right out of the box, but...

I'm assuming a windoze machine here...

With your laptop hooked to the internet connection direct, open a console window and type "ipconfig". Make note of the IPv4 address on the active connection (NOT on any ones that say media disconnected)

Hook your router to the internet connection and fire it up.

If your router has a wired output port, hook the laptop to that. Type "ipconfig"in the console window again. The IPv4 address should now be something like 192.168..xxx.xxx. If it still has the same IP address as when hooked direct, type "ipconfig /release", then "ipconfig /renew". See if now has something like 192.168..xxx.xxx

If there is no wired port, try wireless, but you'll need to make note of the address of the wireless adapter, not the previous (wired) one. If you're not getting a 192.168.xxx.xxx address, then either the router isn't working right, or you're not making an RF connection to the router...

Is the wireless port on the laptop turned on? If the laptop works well when connected to the router that's what I'd check. Look under control panel, 'network connections' to turn the ports on/off.
Also turn off the local Internet port or you will continue to get an "Internet cable unplugged" error.

I misread the last sentence.
I re-reading it sounds like you are not working thru from either computer.
When I had to replace my DSL modem I could not get it to work even with Tech help but the tech mentioned something called PPPoE. (It has to do with the the address setup.) That setting must match within the router and the modem. It's should be covered in your manual. Try changing the setting in the router but don't do anything to the modem if it's working properly.
Good luck, Sam

Got home a while ago with a new and different router. After about one hour of pure hell I'm finally on line with the new router. Thanks to all.

I have Centurytel DSL service and the Modem has to be bridged to work with a router. What brand and model number is your modem? What brand/model is your router?
