O/T truck pulling

I pulled my truck last year in the stock class and had a lot of fun. Its a 1988 chevy half ton. straight cab long box. The local rules are that you can only have one of the following: ladder bars, aluminum intake, or headers. Which one do you think will be the best? Also I am upgrading tires. What are other people using. I drive on the road quite a bit so keep that in mind. The track is a heavy clay.

When I was pulling, years ago, I bought 2 lengths of black iron pipe. I made a long drawbar. Bolted the pipe, one on each side, to the frame, under the cab. Brought the pipes together for a drawbar hitch. I set the hitch at minimum height, connected from below, to the bumper hitch.
I was pulling against a variety of trucks, all kinds of power. They were all pulling from the bumper, with a clevis, or from a reciever hitch. When they moved out, the rear would squat, and the front would raise. And they all spun out.
When I pulled, The WHOLE truck would sqat, and I would out pull them all. With a stock engine.

Andrew, I hate to rain on your parade here But if you think you have a real shot against the Big DSL 1ton 4x4 trucks you are delusional. A DSL shop down the Road from me here in In Texas has a bunch of Hard Core Truck addicts. One guy has a 1200 Hp Cummings that is fully street able too. He is at the outer limits of his factory 6 speed, Keeps grenading the Input Shaft. He had put $3500 in the Tranny in since Sept. Still hasn't solved his input shaft problem.
Andrew, All I am bringing to your attention Is IMHO you will be out classed here, You are carrying a knife to a gun fight.
Your old 88 1/2 ton chevy is a great farmer rancher weekend warrior rig. You need to find a DSL 1 ton 4x4 to have a real shot against the full time pullers. This DSL Shop I mention above,,,These Guys specialize in 300 ft DSL 4x4 pulling trucks Just my thoughts. You really do need to re think your strategy. If you do, be ready to spend upwards near $20K for a 300 ft truck Hope this helps.

Maybe he's delusional, maybe you are. He said he's already done it and had fun. Maybe you are not actually familiar with the pulls that he is going to.

Perhaps you haven't heard that trucks run in classes, stock, modified and super modified. Then there are weight classes. If they are running 1/2 ton stock pickups against 1 tons with deisels maybe they need to use a new scale.

The same way a Farmall M doesn't pull against a blown alcohol modified.

My fault, No,I do not know the specific rules on trucks. But I do suspect Truck pulling is like Crack Cocaine a little is never enough It will lead to bigger and meaner trucks, thus costing more and more $$$$$$$$.

You'll have to check with your rules. Here the stock class made a rules change this past year, that would allow stock trucks to run cut tires on their trucks. Before it was just DOT tires. Good Luck and have fun. It's a blast!

John your right about 1 thing. i have no chance against a 1ton diesel. but the class i pull in is street stock gas class. have to be under 6200 pounds, liscensed and insured road legal, 26" max hitch height. also you can only have 1 of three(stated in my post above). By the way I won last year. beat a 2003 3/4 ton chevy and an 89' 3/4 ton. its not the size of the dog in the fight its the size of the fight in the dog.

Andrew 88 should be throttle body inj. stick with the stock intake, headers would your best choice. Then you could find a chip to put in the computer, maybe even a 454 injector body for a little more air in. Key is just have fun. Brad
