I have Verizon Wireless internet service and would like to hookup a router to my desktop computer so I can use my laptop in other places
in house,so my question is what router to get and
how does it hookup and whether I can do this on the Verizon Wireless aircard that I use?

I am assuming you have a verizon cell phone with internet, if so you do not need a routeer at all, your phone is it, you do however need a mobile hotspot account set up with it, cost more money a month though. Hope this helps...Bob

No my internet service is an aircard that plugs into usb hub on my desktop computer.I can move aircard from one computer to another but was wanting to leave aircard in desktop and be able to use laptop in other places in house.

Hi!
Your need to look at wireless routers. You would pruchase the wireless router, then pulg your aircard into it to provide the internet connection. Your PC and laptop would connect throughout the area (depends on the wireless router, but mine works from 50' away) to the wireless router.

Each device you connect will need a aircard, or if you locate the wireless router with your computer, it can plug in via the standard cable.

Besure when you install to use the security options, so others can not piggyback on your wireless network without the password.

I recomend Cisco routers, however there are others that are good quality.

I don't have experience with Windows 7; apparently Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is hard to find onit, but it's there. It's very easy with XP.

Start out by trying to turn ICS on and plugging both computers into a hub (not router) or connect them directly with what's called a "crossover cable" (but a hub is cheap, probably costs the same as the crossover cable, and is nice to have around in case guests ever need to connect).

Once you get ICS working you can buy the more expensive router and move the cable from the hub to the router. Then all you need to do is set up the wireless connection on the laptop. The computer with the Verizon card doesn't need any wireless connection to the router since it will be connected to the router by cable.

Your saying that I will need another aircard
for my laptop to use it with the router?

One question I have is--will you eventually be streaming video (movies) to your computer or through a device to your television set? If so you will want the router to have a good speed to it. Many today are easily capable of doing the streaming.

I had to purchase a wireless router so that I could use a Roku streaming video device. Roku has a list which is not all inclusive for those that work well with their devices.

I bought what is call an "N" class. It was about $35 and streams the video well, and does speed tests well for my computer.

I'm not computer trained or real knowledgeable but someone here can sure advise you.

You need to speak to Verizon Wireless about a wi-fi hotspot device. Some of the newer phones can actually provide a hotspot. If you have a newer laptop, it may have a built in wi-fi card. You need to trade in your usb wireless card and get a wi-fi hotspot device or a phone thats capable of providing one. You could then get a wireless usb adapter for your desktop. Maybe???
