Tire Chains

A friend asked me to help him find a set of chains for his 4010 JD. He doesn't farm, just wants them for plowing snow. The last storm had ice underneath the snow and the 4010 was helpless. I googled tire chains (18.4x34) and the prices run from about $400 to $900. I would think the cheaper set would do what he wants to do. Any to stay away from? 3/8 or 7/16 chain? Any input appreciated, thanks, Chris in NW Illinois

Try tirechains.com.

Ladder type chains are much inferior to Duo-Grip or double ring type on snow and ice because they will work themselves down between the lugs where they make little or no contact with the surface.

Keep in mind that tire chains for 18.4 X 34 tires will be very heavy, expensive to ship and not easy to install.

I agree if you have 23 deg Firestones or equivalent. But if you have 45 deg tires they work quite well. I made a set of chains for a 4010 with 18.4 X 38 tires, using a set of double 10X20 truck chains, I just cut the center chain out, and bent the two cross chains around one link in the middle. They wrap way around your tire that way.

The ladder or "road chains" are not very effective on on some tires like Firestone 23s, however they work pretty good worn tires and brands having more tread angle. That being said they do not compare to duel ring chains for traction on off road surface conditions, but DRs are not well adapted to running down the road. or preserving a blacktop driveway when plowing it.

www.tirechains.com has tire chains of all sizes shapes and v-bar, 2 link, 4 link spacing.

Surf the net and see 4 yourself.

ordered set for 1974 Ford 2000, duo grip, $284 delivered to garage door in 3 days. Slapped on tractor and was plowing snow and ice, no slipping, like a new tractor. Definetely a great place to deal with, tirechains.com, Mark

Thanks for the reply's. I looked at Tire Chains.com, Duo grip set cost $388.31 plus shipping. At Tire Chains R US, Duo chains are $461.32 with free shipping in the US. I'll let him know and decide which one he wants. Thanks again, Chris

I'll second the double ring chains, as well as Tirechains.com. Great prompt service / high quality. Tell them what you want, it shows up at your door.

This is one year I felt good about buying snow chains for my tractor several months ago. Sure come in handy and made a lot of difference.
I did not know how costly they were in till all this snow hit. Got mine use but in good condition for only 100.00 and now I am happy about it.

I picked up a bunch of chain and clevises about a year ago. Made some log/tow chains out of some and still had a bunch left. Kid in town did something for me on my tractor and wouldn't take anything, so I took the opportunity to unload all the leftover junk I had.

He cut it in lengths to fit around (across) the tire/rim and fastened it with a clevise. The holes in the rims allowed him to do I think 12 chains on each wheel. Takes him a little longer than some folks to put on a set, but he's not sweating and cussing when he's done and they work just as good as a plain set.
