Man dies when tractor flips

COLBERT HEIGHTS - A retired Colbert Heights school bus driver was killed Friday evening in a farming accident.

James Ray Winsted, 73, 4210 Woodmont Drive, Tuscumbia, was pronounced dead at the scene by Colbert County Coroner Carlton Utley.

Colbert County Sheriff Ronnie May said the accident occurred behind Winsted’s house, which is just north of Isbell Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.

Emergency crews at the scene said the accident occurred about a quarter-of-a-mile behind Winsted’s house.

According to deputies at the scene, it appeared Winsted was pulling a trailer loaded with rocks behind his tractor, and as it went down a small hill, the trailer slid sideways, throwing the tractor over.

Winsted apparently was thrown off the tractor and then pinned underneath when it flipped over on him.

The accident was reported to 911 at 5:19 p.m. when the sheriff said a neighbor found the victim after Winsted’s wife got concerned for his safety.

May said Winsted’s wife said the last time she had seen her husband was between noon and 1 p.m.

“When it started getting close to dark, and she hadn’t heard from him, she got concerned and called the neighbor to go look for him,” the sheriff said.

Emergency personnel at the scene said from all indications the accident occurred a few hours before it was discovered.
