PARTS CLEANER

I am having no luck in finding a parts cleaner. I have seen them online, but I would really love to just walk into a store today and buy one.

Has anyone fabricated one? I don't have a welder, so it would have to be an easy to make parts cleaner. I guess I could just use one of those oil dran pans, but I would really like to have a cleaner that can hold up to 3-5 gallons of solvent.

I think you can purchase a "cheap" one at places like:Harbor Freight,China built stuff. Or tractor supply stores etc. They are ok, but for the price, not built like they used to be. You can make one out of an old kitchen sink or small barrel etc. You'll have to locate a pump as well. Good luck. I have been wanting to build one for over 15 years.

I don't have one either, but you got me thinking. A 15 gallon drum, an old kitchen sink, a pump, some plumbing, a little ingenuity, and it should work.

if you get one from Harbor Freight DONT use a petroleum based solvent...mine lasted about 20 minutes with mineral spirits in it and locked up.
luckily a neighbor of mine had a old Varsol parts washer collecting dust and i happened to be there when it was in his way.

I"ve seen them built with a clothes washer or dishwasher circulating pump. However, I"d prefer to purchase one with the auto lock lid because of fire danger.

The local farm and home place has them. Also any good parts store should have them or be able to have one in with in 24 hours. I also think places like Lowe's have them

5 gallon bucket.. 5 gallon metal bucket ( thompsons / kerosene) on side cut in half. if you do the kerosene one you already have fluid for 3 changes!

the pumps are cheap too.. 5$ last time I got one.

that or harbor freight sells them.

We currently have 4 of them in our shop. Only one is currently being used, one is sitting clean and empty, 2 need a little work. I think we need to get rid of a couple of them. 2 of them are nice industrial Clean-O-Matics. they sold for about $900 new.

I checked out the Harbor Freight website and they don't have one, but I will call them because maybe they just don't have it on the website?

Hey folks,...thanks for all the replies!

Detmurds.Just sent my Son out to the shop to take pictures of what we done. Several years back 9 years ago we got the cheap one from( O K. guys , Line up to get the spear in)Harbor Freight. Didn't want to use their solution(Uncle Harolds OATMEAL MASH) to clean parts , It was water soluble and didn't clean at all.Had an OLD OIL FURNACE so we mounted the pump assembly (NO WELDING REQUIRED)with a filter ,wired in a switch on the front of the tank so now it takes 10 gal of kerosene /#1 fuel oil 1/2/and 1/2. Now we got us a parts washer that does the job. Filter catches 90% of the junk after we scrape off what we can,in order to keep solvent cleaner. At least enjoy the pictures . Regards LOU.

Thanks so much for doing this! I likes it,..I likes it alot!

Several years ago I made one out of a single bowl deep stainless steel kitchen sink. It drained thru the regular drain into a 6 gallon plastic pail. The filter was an old sock fastened to the drain with a SS clamp. In the bucket was a parts washer replacement pump that I bought several years ago for $30. Built a wooden 2X4 frame on casters for it to sit in , hooked it up with a switch. and a plastic tube from the pump up thru a faucet hole for the fluid to run thru. Stuck a piece of heavy wire down inside the tube to hold it in the position I wanted it. First job after I built it was overhauling a JD 2640. It went in the shop with an almost full tank of diesel fuel, 5 gallons of which went in the parts cleaner. It worked well for me and is now working well for my son.

I am interested in cleaning some parts by hand in a tub, however I am intersted in these washers. What kind of recirculating pump are you guys using her, and isn't kerosene a bit smelly? What kind of solvent or degreaser can one use? What is Varsol? Thanks in advance...

Great news! I just found out that the Napa store in my area sells about 6 different models. I will go there tomorrow and start cleaning some parts!!!!

Well,...here is what I did: I ordered the 20 gallon cleaner from Harbor Freight today for 99.99. The ones they had at Napa cost too much for the sizes they had available. Yes, the H.F. stuff may be cheap in quality, but it is the chance I have taken!!
