Making a squirrel cage fan using a 110v motor from a furnace. Three wires from the motor black, gray, red. If I put voltage to the black and gray wires the motor comes on. What is the red wire for and where should it go?

Use the gray as the common or neutral, use black or red for the hot. Cap the one you do not use. If it has a plate on it you should be able to find which color is hi and which is low.

In case you do not know it, the fan will work better if you restrict the out flow. I thought the guy was crazy when he told me, but try it yourself.

Usually common is a white wire, black is high speed and red is low speed. I'm guessing that your gray is common. I would use black and gray and measure the amp draw. Most motors have the amps draw on them and the wiring diagram too. Harbor freight sells a cheap amprobe for around $20.

If you want to take a chance, just use black and gray and wait for a few minutes. If the motor doesn't get hot and stink, I'd say you are good to go.
