Thermostat location

The thermostat is bad on the A/C I use for discing. To change it is a major tear down to get at the front of the engine where it's installed. There is a block drain at the rear of the block that is very accessable. If I put the thermostat there will I get the same temp reading? Stan
 
So you mean the temperature sender. I think the back of the head will be fine. Low on the block will not be so fine,
 
You mean the temp sender ? If so, Installing it in the block drain will read cooler than a sender installed in the head.
The upper block and head add quite a bit of temperature to the coolant.
