1958 Ford 641 Hydraulic problem

I have a 1958 Ford 641. I used it with my finishing mower about three months ago and everything worked great. I went out and started the tractor today and I have no hydraulics. I opened the primer port on the pump and have fluid there but no pressure. Any of you guys seen a pump go out just sitting for a few months?

You've probably lost prime to the pump.
You say you opened primer port on the pump but assuming you first checked the level of the oil did you let it burp all the air bubbles out till you got a clear flow of oil?

I have plenty of fluid on the dipstick and fluid present in pump, but pump does not seem to be picking up fluid. Open port with engine running does not push fluid out of bleeder. Never seen one go out without getting weak or loosing prime first. Could it be maybe a blocked suction line?

Possible blocked line. Are you in cold country? Ice?
Could you have bumped the hyd manifold the last time you used the tractor. Might be worth at least tightening the manifold bolts to see if they are loose. Both ends.
You might consider new orings for the manifold too. Some guys say to only buy new orings from new Holland

Where are you located at??? If it is real cold you might have several different things wrong. 1) Your pickup tube might have ice in it. Some of these smaller tractors get condensation in the transmission cases. I own one, it never sets out side but each spring I get a quart or two of water out of it.
2) The cold makes steel contract. I have seen leaks in the suction side of things that go away when warm. Check the manifold mounting bolts. They can be loose causing a leak.
3) The cold also makes orings and caskets not seal as well so you might have a suction leak. It could be in any of the joints in the suction side of the oil circuit. Cold oil is harder for the pump to pickup too.

Warm weather might fix all of the problems. I know I could use a fix of warm weather. LOL

How cold is it where you are. If below freezing you might have some water/ice problems. Or it could be like my 841 which takes a few minutes to get the oil moving and things working. If you have a gauge there is a test port under the seat that you might check pressure at

I was HOPING it was the cold weather, but I'm in south Alabama. The worst cold we've has lately is high 20's. I'm no hydraulic expert mind you, but if there no fluid flowing out of the bleeder port, wouldn't that mean a suction blockage or bad pump?

The pump and manifold has not been removed in several years. Bolts are tight. In the case of a suction leak, would I see bubbles in the bleeder port with the engine running?

With the engine running, I would expect to see hydraulic oil all over the place! At several gallons a minute, it sprays out of the open prime port pretty fast with a running engine. I do my priming by just turning the engine over with the starter, not actually starting it.

I wonder if you might have some blockage of the intake pipe to the hydraulic pump. If there is any chance of that blockage being ice, I would try putting the tractor inside for a day to thaw it out. If it still doesn't prime right, I would try removing the hydraulic manifold to see how fast the oil will drain out of the hydraulic sump. You do have the proper hydraulic oil in it, don't you? If the oil is whitish, it has water in it, and should be replaced. When you replace the hydraulic manifold, new O rings help prevent a possible leak. Good luck!

I don"t think it"s ice. Had a high today of 57°. But it sure seems like fluid is not getting to the pump or the pump just suddenly stopped working.

Looks like I'll be taking the manifold off this week. I'll let you know what I find.

I really appreciate all the help.

Unless you're using a remote the only thing the hyd runs is your three point. You may have pressure, a lot of reasons a three point won't lift.
But, you might check that the pump is running, gear may be sheared.

JDseller, you were right, warm weather did fix the problem. Went out last weekend ready to tear into a rebuid. I started her up, opened the primer port and lo and behold its bubbling. I guess the oil was just too cold to flow.

I really appreciate all you guys sharing your know how.
You always help me out. THANKS!
