Ford bumper to bumper warranty

My wife's taurus 2008 sounds like needs brakes(grinding noise) Its still under warranty. For the last 8 months, I can't work on cars. If it goes to dealer, what do I expect to pay for? 33000 miles. Thanks, I have no dealer experience and was proud of it until now. Dave

brakes are wear item per all the dealers I have used

if something let loose thats another story

you can do the job yourself or have it done at most private shops for less than dealer will charge you

IMHO

I agree with Grumpy,33000 is pretty good on original factory pads. Warr doesnt cover. Don't take to dealer, over $65 per hr and they will nail ya for new Ford rotors too if it is grinding.

Brakes have a ware indicator that will make a noise to let you know when to check the pads for ware. Cheap pads on new cars and trucks. Just need to change pads. About half to one our job and $50 parts.

It may be just noise, only way to tell is have them checked. If they do not pull all four tires to check the brakes then go to another shop and do it quick. The wife's van and my truck both have over 100,000 miles on the original pads.

Do you have basic mech skills? If so Buy the Haynes manual for the car. It will walk you through the replacement of brake pads. It's child's play. Then teach the wife how to drive 100 yards ahead of her car,

I don't know about the Taurus, but my other Fords/ Merc will usually go 80K to 100K before they need the first set of pads replaced. I agree with the other guys, if it is caught quick enough, you can usually do just the pads and not rotors.

Early this winter, the front brakes were making a nasty grinding noise on our Grand Marquis with about 62K. I couldn't believe they were worn out that soon, but pulled the wheels and found more than 60% of the pad left, and some little hard pebble lodged in there. The dang stone was making the grinding noise. I pried it out and everything has been good since. The delights of driving on gravel roads!

Unless your wife is really tough on the go and stop pedals, I really doubt your brakes are worn out at 32K. But then again, before I married my wife, she was on her 3rd set of brakes by 33K on her 67 Mustang (4 wheel drum brakes). And probably her 3rd set of tires as well. We had some serious discussions about her driving style and her tickets collected. But this is 40+ years later. Oh the memories.....

That's plenty of time for the pads to be shot ! I don't know how or where or what those others are talking about. I worked at a dealership and NEVER saw any brakes on a car or truck go anywhere near 80K plus.

I stand by what I have said, and it is not just true of my Fords, but also my son's family cars and trucks. And my daughter's older Taurus and her F250. Now this is really just academic, as the Taurus owner needs to have the front wheels pulled and brakes checked. You seem to be betting the pads are shot, and I am betting they are far from being shot (unless the driver keeps her left foot on the brake pedal while driving).

I guess we'll just have to wait on his inspection report.

Brake pads, like windshield wiper blades and clutch discs, are considered "wearable items" under most warranties. Dealers and manufacturers can't control if you drive with your foot on the brake [had a great uncle who did after a stroke], or if you slip your clutch a lot, or if you use your wipers to try to remove ice from the windshield...so those items are usually NOT covered by warranty, unless something breaks.

Brake pad life is 90% driver behavior.

Aggressive drivers cannot expect much more than 20K miles from modern brake pads in normal driving.

Non aggressive drivers can expect 60K miles or more in normal driving.

I would not expect your warranty to cover any of the cost of brake pad replacement, and I would expect the dealer to charge you somewhere between $150 - $200 for front only brake service not including rotors.

It would cost somewhere around $25 - $35 and take ah hour or two for one to do it onesself.

My last PU - 02 Chevy 2500 HD - needed the rear pads replaced at 80K miles. Dealer said the fronts were only half worn out. I had the fronts checked again at 130K and they said they would need replaced relatively soon. I traded it at 147K and had not replaced the front pads.

I used to get that or more, but I averaged 120 miles per day, virtually all xway. I usually put the cruise control on when I got on the xway, and took it off when I hit the off ramp.

I would personally take it to a reputable mechanic instead of the dealer, probably save some money. I've been lucky, 168,000 miles on 2007 2500 Duramax-stock pads. Lots of highway driving, though. When I do tow, I let the trailer brakes do alot of work!

My 2003 HD2500 is the same way, fronts are still in good shape,I pull a 35 ft 5th wheel with it. I have over 100,000 on it

Open the glove box and call the 800 number in the manual. I did and got a free complete chrome off paint job on and 89 Olds.

I've never known brakes to be covered under warranty, although for brakes to fail at 33K there MIGHT be a defect for which the dealer will cover under warrantee. I have heard of rotors being replaced under warrantee, but brake pads are wear items and at the very least you'll probably end up paying dealer list (~100 bucks per set) for the pads.

Personally, I'd take to an independent shop I trust. But if your wife is more comfortable having the work done at the dealer, it's probably less aggravation in the long run to let her take it in. Figure a minimum of $200 front/$200 rear to have the work done at the dealer.

A brake job.... Brakes are generally considered a wear item and you will pay the full deal. Since it's not that old you might get lucky and only need pads/hardware and rotors. If you're not so luck, add calipers to the list.
You might also be just as well off finding a local shop to do that work rather than a dealer...

Dean has got it RIGHT brake pads are 90 % driver and for some reason seems weomen seem to get shorter life. Certainly not a warrant thing.

Worst they can say is NO,,, at the least get your free alignment out of it before the warranty expires... I have seen ware items warrantied, it depends on who writes it up....

The original brakes on my Ranger did 100K miles... but... that was a full complete replacement and the drums fell off in two pieces. Ever since then I seem to be changing rear brakes about every year or 20-25K miles and fronts every 3 years or so. Originally the truck spent most of it's time on highway miles. Now it's mostly beating around on dirt roads and general hard driving. Aftermarket shoes are also crap...

Thanks for info. Forgot to tell you we just purchased this vehicle. If I could still get on the ground, I would be checking this out as I have for the last 50 years. But you gave me lotta insight on dealerships. Dave
