hay baling cost???

Hey folks,

Just got offered a couple acres of nice mixed grass for hay. Price wasn't mentioned and they probably don't want anything but I want to be keep using the place. Going price for small squares here is 1.00 - 2.00 for a small square (30-35 pounds) and 26-28.00 for a 4x4 round (7-800 lb). Cost for rolling a bale is 7.00 (just for rolling and leaving on the field).

I would do everything myself so, based on the prices above, would 50 cents a bale be a fare offer? I don't want to insult them but don't want to go overboard either.

Thanks, Dave

I am $4 for a small square here, good hay. I'd pay em a buck or 2, just to keep them interested.

The going price here is 1-2 bucks. Setting actual price aside, would 1/2 be an acceptable offer?

What hay land I rent I pay from $6-$16 per ton of harvested hay, depending on quality. It's not like I'm getting a great deal at these prices for my area, as I have people offer hay to me at these prices almost every year and I turn it down. Have enough ground to cover as it is.

WOW!! thats cheap!! Here in S.E. Nebraska most are getting 3.50 - 3.75 for "horse" hay..small squares. I presold mine last fall for 3.75 per.

.50 cents meaning thats what you charge to cut, rake and bale..per bale?? Buddy customs charges 1.25 per bale..

Twine for me is almost 30.00 a box now. Get ...give or take...500 bales per box..if all goes well.. plus your gas..how much gas to mow, rake and bale.

my two cents..depends on where you are thats cheep

Whoopps miss read.. You want to give THEM .50 per bale to take the hay.. wow...um...most around here give a guy the hay just to keep it mowed for them..

I charge $10 a bale for large rounds and $10 an acre
for swathing and it's not enough. Most guys are
getting 12 & 12 and I probably will this year.

Here too but I want to be the #1 choice........ If there are fruit trees on it, I get it for free but the open stuff is interesting to the big guys too.

Around here hay like you are speaking of is baled on the halves. Then, if the person doing the baling wants the land owner half the price is the going rate for hay in that area.

Sounds like a plan...

Thanks

I would give tham at least $1 per small square. To offer them 50 cents will probably mean they will try to get someone else next time. You are not talking the family fortune nere.

Half the bales should be your share, no cost. The other half are landowners. Ask him what he wants for them. Buy em if the price is right, if not leave them. Odds are he;ll call and ask you to come and get them after awhile. Just make sure they ge stacked and covered.

Are you going to fertilize it? I wont do less than 2/3 for me 1/3 for land owner in Oklahoma or I charge $20 a round bale to mow, rake, and bale.If I was back in Ohio I might do 50/50 as I got a lot more per acre.I guess .50-1.00 depending on how good the hay is how far you have to travel and yeild.

No fertilizer and no stress. Within a couple miles RT. The half is not a bad idea since the going price is low anyway.
Just have to make a good impression this year and should be OK. The big guys usually leave a mess.

I have one place I pay the owner by the bale. I pay $.50 per small square and $5/ 4x4 round bale. I would have thought prices over there for hay would have been higher.

Doesn't take much. Couple folks ask quite a bit and end up keeping their stuff. Just takes someone to pay the prices once and they keep climbing. I buy everything I need as soon as it is put up but miscalculated by about 30 rounds this year (summer was drier and not enough grass last year) Lucked out and the cousin of the guy I normally buy from had enough to cover me for the same I paid his cousin. Real good folks and close to home.
