I have a IH 674 diesel, and it blows unburned fuel out the muffler. Has anyone heard of this,is it the nature of this model of tractor? I just purchased it recently. Thanks for any help.

Kinda common on a diesel that does a lot idleing, and never gets hot enough to fully burn all the fuel.Cover the radiator and put it to work.Get it up to proper operating temperature

No it's not natural, Could be with a low idle. I would think an exhaust valve. I think a compression check might be in order.

What you are seeing is not unburned fuel but rather it is water mixed with carbon.

Under ideal conditions the only byproducts of burning diesel fuel would be water and carbon dioxide. Most of the hydrogen is combined with oxygen to form water which is vapor form because of the temperature from combustion. The carbon ends up as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and plain carbon. That is the black stuff you see in the exhaust. Under no load or light load conditions the exhaust temperatures are not great enough to keep the water vaporized. As it condenses it picks up some of the carbon as it leaks out of the exhaust joints.

Yup! Probably spent a lot of time idling and putzing around. I've seen other(IH) tractors slobbering out the exhaust for the same reason. Put it work for a couple hours and open up the throttle before you determine somethings wrong. You could put some conditioner/injector cleaner in the tank. It may help and the carboard in the rad is a good idea to get it up to proper operating temp. I was told on my Cat 3204 when it was rebuilt to not let it idle for longer than neccessary. Some engines will get so slobbered up that won't even rev up and a 3204 is one of them. The newer Cat engines could idle all day with no ill effects. Diesels are made to work. Dave
