Swiss girls!!

I'll bet every guy on here punched on this one. Sorry to disappoint. Grandpa's barn in the '50,s. Does anyone raise Brown Swiss anymore? Every drop of milk our family drank (and there were many) came from these gals , through a strainer pad and into cans. We filled our mason jars full , still warm , once or twice a week and headed home. No pasteurize , homogenize or anything. Just scrape off the cream every morn and fill cereal bowl and glass. Out of us 4 boys growing up on our own farm later , no broken bones and no cavities to this day! Spose these gals were at all responsible?? Used to be scared to walk down between their heads when 6 or 7 yrs old. Grade "A" barn do ya think?? The way it was in the '50,s. Randy. ( those other cattle were from our own farm early '60,s)

I used to have MRY cattle in Holland,a dual breed like the brown swiss.
I prefer them over holsteins any day.

i milked a spell for a guy in Ontario who had jersey's.

I once bugged him about that with,"how come yersey's" ,you don't want to milk goats and you prob got no money for holsteins do ye!

He wasn't to pleased with that.LOL

Nice Ladies all.
Our Mother used to milk a Jersey each day, she would then boil the milk, we scraped the cream off top when cold and had it with bread and jam.. Yum. not allowed to drink until boiled.
I suppose that is close to pasteurization. 1940ish.

My grandfather liked Brown swiss so we always had a few in the barn full of holsteins. I think my brother still has a couple in his herd. I have quite a few Jerseys in my herd. I tell people I just use the holsteins to rinse out the pipeline. I've used the line about "cant afford a holstein and too proud to own a goat" too.

my neighbor has about 1/3 brown swiss and 2/3 holsteins. other than him, its mostly holstein herds and some jersey herds.

Dad had some brown Swiss when he farmed in the late 40s, early 50s. I was born in 1947. Dad had lots of problems: furnace went out, I had scarlet fever and the quaranteened the farm, and he let a couple of cows go dry. He sold out in 1954. I still remember lots of things from the farm. Every kid should grow up in the country. When I go to the county fair now I don't recognize many breeds.

I remember Dad was feeding the cows and droping a bale through the trap door upstairs while I was in the lower level waiting. Just when he dropped the bale, I moved to the other side of the opening. Bale knocked me right into the manger. Kind a scary when your about four or five.

Thanks for the pictures and memories.

Larry

I liked in the barn in the winter when the barn was warm and cold as blazes outside kept warm by the cows. I liked to watch them eat that silage. That all changed when my brother joined the Air Force in 1951 and I was drafted. Hal

There is a small herd of those for milk near me in North Central Ohio.

Funny how that freash milk helped you and now it is practically illegal to drink it.

when we milked we had a few brown swiss . had all the dairy breeds but they were MY favorites. had i went into dairy farming, i would have had all brown swiss. my uncles had reg. guernseys . they had quite a nice herd but i still like the brown swiss!!!!

I was kinda expecting to see the swiss cows. We had some up until about 6 or 7 years ago. Now just have one 1/2 swiss/1/2 holstein mixed in with our holsteins.

lol naw, i knew it had to be about cows by the size of the post, otherwise it would be gone by now, lol

Nice gals.

I'd rather be sipping some Swiss Miss hot chocolate and watching Swiss Miss Melanie Oesch and her family.

I don't remember how I came across her videos but I find the nice young lady very talented and highly entertaining.

This video tells the story about her.

There was a herd of Registered Brown Swiss that called this farm home back then as well. I have a few pics and a pile of registration papers. My great grandfathers pride and joy. Nice pics.
