OT: Rheem Heat Pumps?

Anybody have one or have any experience with them? I think I"m gonna break down and replace my old POS ICP unit and have found some really good buys on the Rheems. Only problem is no local dealers or installers so nobody around knows anything about them. I"ll probably just do it myself. 3.5 ton, 14 seer, 8 hspf, deleiverd to my house for $2800. 10 year compressor warranty and a 5 year parts. Over the summer I"ll probably be adding some sort of wood furnace to do the majority of the heating.

I installed a Rheem AC in my old house in 1977. I built a new house in 1995.. I understand the AC is still running. Ichanged out the evap fan motor a couple times. Otherwise it works fine. That being said Rheem is not made by the same folk. Heil is probably the best. I think they are still made in Canada or Tennessee.. I have had excellent results with Heil in three different houses. My neighbor has one heat pump and a gas furnace and another AC unit outside.. Janitrol and Carrier I think. NOISY and he is always getting someone over there to work on them.. Arcoaire is a good one. My sixteen year old Arco AC runs perfect.. I think Heil may have bought them out.. They could be back in business, but that don't mean they aren't junk now. Heil would be your best bet installed by a master hvac mechanic. Your mileage may vary.

We bought one in California a few years back. We opted for the "scroll" compressor, and just slightly over-sized it.

With the exception of one relay once it ran flawlessly. Even on those 115 degree days it waas able to take a few moments to rest.

The hardest part was getting anyone that wanted to open it up to not strip out all the srews and leave out the rubber backed washers.

It was outside my bedroom window and the difference between having all the screws tight and with the rubber washers, and one with most all the fasteners stripped, missing and pannels rattling is a big deal.

It came with year or two "free service" contract and everytime they came around it would seem that they would strip screws. I'd get livid. They'd come back and oversize em. I'd call again and they'd come back and install the rubber back washers.

The Rheem product was fine. I think it's sold under other labels too.

Mine says Coleman on it, don't know who really makes it, put it on top of a 50 yr old LP furnace, sized the A coil one ton larger, It is 13 seer or 13.5 is quiet and is heating the house now 23 deg. need a little lp from 4 am to sun comes up. when is below 30, will not heat the house when it gets down in the teens. I love it. Also buy a new refrigerator, and freezer, washer and drier, we found we was paying for them with electricity. We are heating with the heat pump and the electric bill is no higher than when we were using LP.

I am/owner of a rheem dealer service company, and i'm installed hundreds of them, Is it a package unit, if so what is the first 4 #'s of the model #, there is 2 differant models and on is better than the other

Yep, it's a packgage unit and it's the PQMA series. I'm assuming at the price, $2797, it's the cheaper series. Is Rheem considered a contractor series? How does it compare with some of the other brands out there...Goodman, Payne, Heil, and so forth. Trane, Carrier, Lennox, and American Standard are all in $6k to $7500 installed....and that's just a change out.

Rheem had a manufacturing facility 30 miles from here till 2 years ago when they abruptly shut it down and moved it whole hog to Mexico. They did hire a local company to move it though,

I think that is the cheaper unit, but still good unit, i put alot of them in. that's not a bad price considering shipping is included. They are good unit esspecially for the price, i like better than a carrier(also the same thing as a payne) and tempstar(same thing as a heil) I would stay away from Goodman, we use to put them in, they have a bad promblem with leaking coils. Rheem and trane are the top 2 on consumer reports, they have very few problems. You going to put it in yourself? If so i can help you wire it, just get a honeywell digital t-stat, they work good together and i can help you wire it if need be. Rheem themostat wiring is a little differant than everyone elses.

Performance Heating and Air in Versailles is a Rheem dealer. I've had great luck with them, both the brand and the dealer. At the old house I replaced a Rudd with a cracked heat exchanger in the propane unit with a Rheem heat pump + gas pack. After the ex and I split and I moved here I had to replace the GE unit. I went with Performance and a Rheem again.
