OT: power surges

Having an ice storm and the next one is on it's way. Neighbor had a tree take his power lines down. We are on the same transformer. Two years ago, I purchased a sruge protector after a wind storm took my power lines down and caused damage due to surges.

My garage door wouldn't open and it wasn't ice related. Plugged a fan in the power outlet to the opener and I had power. The opener was asleep. I remember reading a while back where someone on this sight paid $94 for a service man to unplug his dishwasher to reset it. While thanks for that post, I decided to unplug my garage opener and plug it back in. It's working fine now. I've had this opener for 20 years and nothing like this has ever happened. Thanks for the post, saved me a service call.

If we get more freezing rain, as predicted, and winds too, I'm looking for my power lines to go down too. Hope the investment of the surge protector pays off.

A purchase of a generator would really pay off also.
Ice is really cruel to power lines.

One thie we had high winds during a thunderstorm and we lost power.
Turns out there was a small tornado also.
I found the power guys working near me and asked how long before power is back on.
They said as soon as we find the poles.
I then took a closer look and the power poles were gone.
I bought a generator that day.
Power was out for over a week.

When wind gets to blowing on ice laden lines and trees the results----as you say, can be cruel.

Photo is from December 2007. Power was out for several days.

The first transformers started going off at night as lines shorted together. A blue flash followed shortly by a loud pop and lights in that portion of the ice would go out.

It was about two weeks before all residents had power again, most within 4 days.

Thanks for the tip on the garage door opener and a reminder of the other.
