Good morning Guys:
Last night coming home from work I had strange
thing happen to to me in my Ford F 150.
I turned the heater switch on and it heated up like normal, then it started to get kool in the truck, I looked at the heat gage and it was moving up and down, up and down. I have never seen this happen before. Is this telling me that the thermostat is going bad, I add'd may be a quart of anti freez.
What do think the problem is, other than it
being a ford.
MANY THANKS: STAY WARM AND HAVE
A GREAT DAY.

Possible head gasket problem. With it fully warmed up, look for bubbles in the coolant in the radiator. Temperature guage moving up and down rapidly can be a sign of air in the coolant from the combustion chamber.

Erratic gauge reading was most probably due to sensor being in and out of coolant. Pressure check system if you don't see a leak and remember thermostats are maintenance items. If you open up the system for repair, depending on the mileage, I'd consider putting in a new thermostat. Gerard

had a 302 play that joke ,,,thermostat ,and head gasket , never could seem to get it to take all the coolant it was supposed to take , like there was a air lock somewhere....OR WATER WAS GOING OUT THE EGAUST as i DROVE ? , btw , if you did have normal heat and just did a tranny split, and a pegged hot temp , the wire might be pinched between engine parts /tranny ,,. pair of young nephews were all bent out of shape ,, came here sheepishly proud of their clutch job repair , and were on their maiden voyage LOL , stopped here wanting water cause the motor was hot., i asked why they drained radiator to change a CLUTCH ? LOL ,,. said they didnt???,. and it didnt take much water and was still HOT !?!?? . wth ? let me See that thing ? ,, found the temp gauge pinched , , just had to loosen bolts pull out flattened wire retighten ,, TRUCK RAN COOL then ,, LOL ,. didn't ruin their mechanical drive , last nite they helped me set a 391 in the grain truck , had it in place in 45 minutes ...

allen"s got the right answer. now did it get low over a long time or all at once? had to go some where. fill er up and watch it close.
