The BIG snow storm ?

If you live west of the Miss. river please chime in and let us guys in the northern Midwest know how bad it is. I am ready, but I will anticipate not being at work on Wednesday and Thursday.

I havent seen snow more then 15 inches deep since 2003.

The forecast here in southern Ontario is for a light dusting Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, which we have now, and then a big dump tonight, about 12", with strong winds.
The station in Detroit says it will be a "huge, crippling, paralyzing snowstorm".
Their words, not mine, it's a quote.
They shouldn't do that, scare the public half to death.
Or maybe the big store chains got them to say it to boost sales.

Central IL, calling now for 16-20 inches and wind gusts to 40mph, starting late morning and going to get worse tonite into Wed. Some snow as heavy as 1-3 inches an hour! Weatherman scaring the crap outta everybody here too.

This may not sound bad to those of you up north, but for us down south things are pretty bad.

At 1:30 this morning (don"t ask what I was doing up) temp was 34 with rain. Within an hour temp had dropped to below 32 with sleet. Winds 20 mph steady out of the north, gusting to 30+.

Current temp is 17 (its 6:20 now), sleeting hard. Sounds like pebbles hitting the windows. Dallas/Ft. Worth and most of north Tx is shutting down.

On top of the 1/2" sleet, they are predicting 2 - 4 inches of snow. Temps will not get above freezing until Saturday. Temp tonight and Wed supposed to get down to 10, with wind chill in the negatives.

Our offices (wisely) are closed today and maybe tomorrow since the temps are too cold for road conditions to improve.

Wind was strong enough to blow our trash dumpster over even though it was up against the house.

I took a couple of pics, will see if James can post them later.

(quoted from post at 04:39:27 02/01/11) -20° here, the NW corner of Nebraska at 4:30am.

How many more days 'til summer? :>)

Allan

Feeling sorry for myself because it's 25 degrees............ Supposed to start hitting the 40's in a few days though. And, you guessed it. rain.

Dave

yeah, I drive through the city of Detroit to work and this AM the roads were merely damp and people would NOT go over 20 mph. Took double the usual amount of time to get to work. All the hype has freaked out the drivers who should only drive on nice sunny days. Can't say how many women I passed going way slower than everyone else with a death grip on the steering wheel, scared half to death to be on the road. All it takes is one of these in each lane somewhere to cause miles long traffic jams.

And all they did on the radio was talk about the upcoming storm. I'll laugh my socks off if it misses us, like it has done in the past. Tomorrow, I'll leave a little earlier and take the 4x4 pickup. Probably take surface streets and stay off the gridlocked expressways.

Here in central NY, we'er getting fine snow coming down hard, winds out of the NE at 10-18mph. We had 16-18" on the ground. The temp is 9F and wind chill @-6F. This is the first part of a one-two punch. Tomarrow we are supose to get a combination of snow sleet, and freezing rain, with posible accumulations of another 1.5' I am not too worried about the freezing rain here, because of our relative altitude, compared to the adjacent Mohawk Valley. I've learned to take each day as it comes, and deal with what mother nature hands us.

In FAR SW Kansas it is blowing, snowing and COLD. Really not much snow yet, but the 30-40 MPH wind and 5 below is tough!!!!

I hear ya!

My daily commute used to include 17 miles of two lane highway with a 60 mph speed limit. If the roads were just a tad iffy, there were two different gals who poked along 30 mph with a death grip on the steering wheel when everyone else would have been comfortable yet at 50-55 mph. There were just enough hills and oncoming traffic so you couldn't pass them. So--they'd be poking along 30 mph with traffic stacked up at least a mile behind.

I hate to admit it, but one was a great-niece of mine.

It has been snowing since about 5 p.m. yesterday. The wind stays blowing about 20 mph+ with gusts to 38 (the highest I've seen recorded). Temperature is 2º and currently with a -21º windchill.

Since it has gotten light enough outside to see well I have made an effort to view the drifts. They are now about 4 inches deep. So glad I'm not elsewhere.

Oh, almost forgot, we did have a very thin layer of ice by noon Monday.

Best wishes everyone.

Last night in Cedar Rapids, Ia. we got 1" and some wind. Right now its not snowing but they are letting school out 2 hrs. early. Our area is set for 5-10" Will make addition when it starts to snow here.

Alot of hype in mid Mich. but only maybe a inch of snow this am. Heard on my Det. radio station about the traffic jams down there. I guess they got everyone scared for no reason, so far. I'm still glad I retired from my real job with a 50 mi commute and 400 mile nightly truck drive. I now drive 4 miles to work and run a school bus around the neighborhood and get the day off when the weather is bad.

My Daughter, in the Missouri valley, in Western
Iowa, phoned last evening, to say that school was
called off today...what a bunch of Whimps !
They call off school at even the threat of a
snowflake, ..I think that our Wisconsin bus
drivers should get HERO medals, and those South
West Iowa ones Chicken awards !
On a visit, over Christmas, we had over 2 feet
on the ground...Council bluffs had a "trace"

I"m just north of Houston. At 6:00 AM the temp was 65 degrees. At 6:05 the temp was 62 and at 6:10 it had dropped to 56 and started raining hard. It's supposed to get down into the low 20s tonight, but the rain has already stopped and it will be clear later today. This would be a heat wave for many of you, but pretty cold for us. C.L.

6 plus inches of fluffy snow here in SE SD yesterday. Winds are blowing it around today. Windchills are expected to get to -45 tonight with an actual air temp of -16. Back up to the 20's for Thursday. Schools are out again today.

Here in Missouri the lake of the Ozarks area we have about 6 inches now and still falling fast and hard. Miami OK as per the news this morning has 13 inches and still falling there. I shovel a path to the barn for my wife this morning and it is almost all filled in already and I did that just before 10 am and it is now just about 10:40. They are calling for about 20 inches here. I'm ready the V plow and chains are on the Ford and it is parked in the hay barn. May have a problem opening up the gate but I'll get it open even if I have to use the V plow to do it LOL

You don't have quite the same drifting issues in Wisconsin. Wind and 6 inches of snow equals 6ft (right where you don't want it) down there :)

It's cleaning up here in Western Wisconsin, but we got it yesterday. I think I have cleared the driveway 15 times since the 1st of the year.

Iowa, especially western iowa, consolidated their schools, lots of their bus routes are 75 miles or more. And western Iowa is full of hills and narrow roads. What is a stuck bus full of kids worth, when the wind chill is minus 15? And the next farm house is over two miles away.

Hi neighbor ! Yea I heard CR and LinnMar were out early . So far Marion is reg day, crossing fingers ,never get much work done in shop when I have kids there . lol

Just got a little snow here in our part of the TX Panhandle. I am guessing 3 to 4 inches. But man is it cold, +4 this morning with a high of 14, wind chill -14. Suppose to get down to -5 tonight with a high of +9 tomorrow. Should be our last cold spell this winter.
