Man, was I into jeans in the late 50's, early 60's. Levis were favorites, then Lee's, Wranglers, and kinda of a cheaper (in my mind at least, Mom was buying) brand -Big Smiths. Osh-Kosh aere more a working mans jeans. Started out with huge cuffs, one turn, then smaller cuffs using maybe several turns, for a while turning just the hem on the inside. From then till now, no cuff at all. Sorry, just an old Phart (63) reminising.

One thing about rolling the cuffs, if you do chores, especially if feeding hay, the cuffs are always full of hay, and then you bring the mess in the house. been there and done that. Sometimes I would remember to clean them if I knew there was a lot in them.

I have not been to church in maybe 40 years but that is a topic in itself and not the point of my post. My elderly mother needs to go to church every Sat. evening with three of my sisters and I dividing up the month. Anyway when I take her every 3rd. Sat. I put on a nice shirt and dress slacks. I am amazed at the wardrobe of others in attendance. Worn jeans and sweatshirts. These are not teens as very few teens attend this church. These are people 60s and 70s. Men and women alike. Of the 5 people up on the alter assisting the priest, 4 of them had on jeans. I guess I am old school but I think if you are going to worship what ever your beliefs you should show some respect and dress up a little bit. Sorry if I stole your thread but it has jeans mentioned.

I never wear anything but.
Matter of fact i got nothing else but jeans.
last time i wore a suit and tie was on my wedding 38 yrs ago,i felt like a dressed monkey, "Yuck.

I also only own jeans except for a pair of dress pants which I call my 'funeral pants' because that is the only time I wear them. I seem to go to a lot of them sometimes. I never roll up my pants because I am 7 feet tall and they are barely long enough as it is.

I was the only kid in my small elementary school to wear overalls. Other kids were wearing blue jeans. I wanted jeans, my mother didn"t see things that way....

But then today, I"m seeing kids wearing pajamas in publuc. My mother would have a fit over that, were she still alive!

My uncle, born in the 1890"s, wore denim bib overalls all the time on the farm. His dressup pair were grey herringbone weave bib overalls. Anyone remember what they were called, what brand they were?

I remember doing the cuffs thing. At least we didn't wear low pants where you couldn't run if you had to.)

Times change, so do we. I wear jeans to small rural Baptist church, probably 1/2 of the congregation does also(including women). 1st Sunday is communion Sunday and then I wear slacks(I'm a deacon)unless I loose track of time and forget what day it is. I know some churches are extremely formal, we are not, we figure if they want to come to church, we want to have them. In summer, several people wear shorts( my Grandparents would have had a fit over this). A few years ago, our preacher went on the bike ride across Iowa. Sunday morning he and another fellow stopped at a nice looking church and went inside. They got stopped at the door and were told they weren't dressed appropiately to attend that church. Paul explained that he was a preacher and they wanted to attend. The guy let them sit in the balcony only if they remained silent and left just before the service ended. I don't think Jesus was that picky, if you want or need to go to church, come on in. My thoughts, Chris

I had a pair just like that! I'm real sure they were "Big Smith". I tried to wear them for good; had several pairs of the wide striped Big Smiths for everyday work, but they didn't fit all that well at the button up sides.

Mom used to buy the cheap straight leg baggy ones so we made her "peg" our jeans for school. You do remember pegging your jeans don't you? You turned then inside out and put them on and had someone "pin" then to fit your legs taper and then took them off and stitched then , basically just making a new seam only this time they FIT! Turn them back outside out and you had a taylor fit pair of COOL jeans! Then there was the "cuff" thing too. That one in the "cool" jeans is my brother, he is 62 now. Photo was from early '60,s on the farm.Randy

No, we didn't do that, but sure would have if had know about it, sure liked the snugger, tighter fit (baggy pants suck)_

Jeans are the bottom part of my 'work uniform' The company gives me $225 a year for shirts jeans and work boots. I get about 2 years out of a pair of Wolverine boots, so I keep the jeans I work in up to date. Wife made me sort out the jeans in my closet last year. I took 27 pair up to the Salvation Army drop off. Still good jeans, just faded and 1 or 2 had a little paint on them. I'm a very popular size, they were bought up inside the week.

In the 50's Mom placed a order for school clothes from the sears catalog, just before scholl started. They were always too long and us kids had to roll up the cuffs. I guess that was the style. Stan

But also - if you wear rubber chore boots - the cuffs will catch a lot of trash before it gets down in the bottom of the boot where it hurts your feet.

Like you say though - don't forget to clean out the cuffs before you come in the house or there'll be trouble.

Hell hath no fury like momma's wrath.

I wear jeans nearly every day, including church on Sunday. If you were to tally the congregation in our country church you'd find a lot more jeans than not. As a kid I wore the standard bibs that most farm kids wore. I promised myself that when I got big enough to pick out my own clothes I'd never wear another pair of bibs, and I haven't, but they are starting to look better. Maybe I'm getting old.

I remember some old-timers flicking their cigarette ashes into their pants cuffs when I was a kid- then would unroll the cuff and "empty the ashtray" when they went outside.

Spring of 1959

I wore jeans (we called "em dungarees) to school back in the 50s up here in the country part of New York State. Also wore "Engineer Boots" all softened up with neats foot oil.
Wore them engineer boots with the pant legs on the outside in the hay fields too; never got any chaf or hayseeds in your boots that way. LOL
Didn"t wear the hat or the shades to school, tho. LOL
