Winter in the deep south

Been seeing all these cold pictures on here. Thought it was time for a change. The picture is of poor quality because I took it with my phone but you can see the cows grazing green grass in the pasture. (Winter Rye) In fact we have farms around here that receive yearlings from up north every year so they can graze all winter long. The rancher gets paid by pounds gained from the calf owners.
The brown grass in the foreground is summer grass but even it has some green weeds in it.

Our winters are wet and mild but the wet makes it feel colder than it is. Have had highs in the 70's past few days. Our average high this time of years is 55 to 65 and lows about 35 to 40.
We do dip down to high teens to mid 20's some nights but it is so seldom the weather man includes in his forecast if it is a protect plants; pipes; pets night. There are even people that do not have pipes protected from freezing. They just let the water drip all night when it gets real cold.

What the hay; a fire hydrent on the edge of a pasture? We're lucky if we have a wet ditch, farm pond, or creek on the property. You must be one of those "modern urban farmers"

This area has grown alot in recent years; mostly from investers buying up dairy farms and making subdivisions out of them.
When I moved here in 1981 the closest neighbor was over half a mile away. Now you can barely walk in the yard without a neighbor seeing you.
This has brought city water to our area but I choose to still get my water from our private well.

Hey John,
Bout the same round here. We did get some sleet and freezing rain a few weeks ago. Just stayed home to be safe from bad drivers. They go nuts at a little sprinkle of rain. I would not even go to the mailbox if there is snow or ice on the road. What did you ever do about the pickup with the bad bearing?

How deep ya plant them hydrants to get em to grow real nice and red like that? I remember seeing green grass but, its been awhile. Come to think of it its been awhile since I seen bare earth or any grass.

When Marilyn and I were in your neck of the woods last Feb. it was cooler than we expected. Went clear down to Venice and we were still wearing our coats. When at Vewnice I did take some pics of the boats with the cell phone and sent them home to my neighbors who were in -15 degree temps at the time. The 50 degree temps we were in was still 65 degrees warmer than the folks at home were enduring. Didn't realize there was so much cattle grazing between New O and Venice. Jim

She didn't have much choice, was going to Tulane so she had to leave for the year. Program she was in wasn't the same after they reopened. It says a lot that they were able to reopen at all the next year.

I agree with that. The coldest I've ever been was in north Louisiana We live in north Arkansas and the jet stream plays hop scotch across us. I've seen it 40 degrees and I would freeze to death and then it be 10 degrees and could work in your shirt sleeves. I've also seen the difference in snow. When we get the dry powdery snow there is no problem getting around but the wet snow is slicker than goose snot. Last year we had over 30" of snow but this year has been very dry.

A young couple lost everything in Katrina, and knew someone in our area, so inquired about moving up here. Somehow, it got in the newspaper, and next thing you know, a car dealer offered to give them a car, motel put them up for free for 2 weeks, someone offered the guy a job, etc., etc.

Its no wonder lots left that area and never looked back.

There are times I get tired of the snow. Then again we have very few problems with insects, reptiles etc. The winter cold and frost kills most of them off.

(quoted from post at 06:30:47 01/30/11) you know story on Natchitoches and Nacogdoches

Yes I know the story on Natchitoches and Nacogdoches. I have lived here over 10 years and did historic tours for a while. This little town is rich in history.
