Does you vehicles have central locks and keyless entry? If so, do they also have the antitheft system that the car will only start if you use the remote to unlock the doors?

Mine will lock and unlock on it's own randomly. Usually while driving, but locked me out several times when I jumped out with the car running.
Just a while ago on the way to work I stopped at a stoplight, remembered I had my hubs locked in and jumped out to unlock them. You guessed it, doors locked and I had a bunch of cars behind mewith the drivers making idiots of themselves. Had to stand there for 5 minutes or so until it decided to unlock itself. Just a liiiiiiitle embarrassing.... Any idea if there is a way to disable the central locks and maybe the antitheft system?

Also, my check engine light came on for awhile today and went back off. Car has been getting bad gas mileage the last few months. Which code reader do I need to get for this model (97 2.0 SOHC) and will faults show up if the light is not on?

Thanks, Dave

Typically something has to tell a module to perform a function like lock or unlock the doors. If it has just one button on the dash, you could try unplugging the switch and see if it still acts up. Ran into that on Chevy Venture van with power sliding doors. The switch on one side was faulty and would intermittantly open the right side door. From there, you need a scan tool to view system data.

In the US we use the OBD ll computer scaner for that year.
The code will be in history even when the light is out.
I think they went to OBD ll in 1996 here in the US.

dave, i think you will need a scanner that can access the body control module functions. a code reader will prolly not find the problem. its sounds like it could be a faulty ground with the module as the problem is intermitent.

OBD2 will only have engine functions. It will take a scan tool capable of body functions. Then there may or may not be any codes stored. In the case of the Venture van, the switch inside on the B pillar intermittantly was making contact causing the module to open the door.

Thinking the root is moisture. Just started this year when I had plenty of water accumulated on the floormats. I'll get a scanner and check things out as far as the engine light (suspect the cat or an O2 sensor). The lock thing is just annoting for now until it strands me.

Brian, right, he also has an engine problem that he posted.
The info on the scanner I posted is for his engine problem not his door lock problem.
The computer will have the code in history that turned on the light.

On most vehicles you can disable the auto door locks and anti theft system. On some you can do it with the operators manual. I did in on my pickup by a combination of turning the key on and off plus using the turn signal lever. I think yours will need a full computer hookup to do it.

I hate the auto lock systems that lock the doors when you go so fast or put your car into gear. I was locked out several time before I started having them disabled on everything I own now. IF I want the door locked I can push a button. LOL

My 96 Intrepid will lock you out also. I finally had a new key made and put it in the gas cap door. No more being locked out.If someone finds the key, they won't get much..

If the problem only exists with the driver's door I would look into the driver's door ajar switch which is usually a pin switch or possibly it's in the door latch. Inputs equal outputs as Brian stated. Hope this helps. Gerard

Dave, you got yourself locked out of your own car while stopped at a red light during going to work time, and you thought other drivers were making idiots of themselfs ? Please do not post that self portrait, we have all seen it before.

just the mentality......I was raised not to kick a man when he's down and help out if possible. To each their own.
