Finally Pictures of My Ground Corn

Hey guys I finally found a 8hp Craftsman chipper and it works great for grind my ear corn. The calves and cows eat it all now. No cobs laying around anymore. Dust is a big issue so Im debating buildin a box with a sealed inlet fot the corn to go into and make me a vent hose to run outside of the barn. And have the box where it will open up and I can scoop it out. That booger will grind alot of corn in an our! Here's a picture of the earn corn after its been run thru. Its a little but im gonna try to lower the speed and hopefully make it a little more coarse. It doesnt have a throttle so it runs wide open at the same constant rpm. Think i need to tone it down a bit.

I think it looks about right like it is. The bigger chunks will still go through the cow but that's what chickens are for.

About every farm around here has an old grinder mixer setting around that they dont use anymore.

We bought our John Deere new in 1967 and it hasn't been out of the shed for 10 years.

Do you have a tractor to pull one? How many animals are you feeding?

Yep i feed my cows then the chickens pick thru thru the pies. They all have green feet now. i kind of feel like i am feeding 2 for the price of one.

I thought I was the only one to use a chipper to crack corn. A feed grinder would be nice but would be excessive for all the more I need for the chickens.

I slowed mine down to 2500 rpm(the clutch on mine locks up at 2000), it still does about the same damage.

Are you using the port where you would put heavy branches, or the hammer mill part?

We had a hammer mill that we ran with a WD 45. Cranked it up about three quarter throttle and shovel in the corn along with minerals. Makes for a HEAVY bag to handle.

I wouldent make it any smaller, looks good, just like I get at the feed mill, without the cob thought. Good way of doing your own without a mixer mill.

Gene, and everyone else, thanks for the comments. We do have a Deere 2755. Ive been looking for a hammermill but there arent many around our area. It would definetly be better, but Im getting along fine with this for now. I feed anywhere from 10-20 head right now. I had considered putting out a few acres of corn but I got this corn so cheap I couldnt afford not to buy it. I run it thru the leaf/twig hopper. Not the one for larger branches. Its does great. But I think a hammermill would cut down on the dust a little.

I would leave it be. You are just cracking the bigger pieces now. If you get too many whole kernels your cows will just pass them through without getting all of the value out of them. I usually use a 3/8 screen with shelled corn. Mine is a good bit finer than yours. Plus your cob will get bigger too.

Have you ever tried shelled corn?I have thought about getting a few sheep again but don't wan't to keep the grinder/mixer now that the cows and pigs are gone.
