Farmall 400 cutting out

I have a "400" that I"m using to skid firewood with. When I let the clutch out to pull something the motor momentarily stalls. If I pull the choke out at this time it will take off. I sprayed the intake manifold and the gasket areas with starting fluid while running and there doesen"t seem to be any leaking. Anyone have any suggestions? TIA

Did you check to see if you have good fuel flow through the carb? Check the jet also. Hope this helps.

When you need to keep the choke on your engine is running lean. You need to do as been suggested and see if there's any blockage from the tank to the carburetor. Pull the tube fitting from the carb where your fuel line connects and look for a screen it could be full of rust or dirt or both. If that dosen't help you need to soak the carb in carb cleaner and clean the jets. Hal

open the load jet 1/4 turn, you are running lean, if this doesen't fix it check for partially plugged fuel line' fuel strainer, ect.

Your running to lean. Open up the main jet a bit till the problem goes away or Open up your main jet till you get black smoke then screw it back in till the smoke stops. If you can not get smoke then you have something plugged up in the main jet circuit of the carb or a fuel flow problem and not getting enough fuel to the carb

In addition to what others have said, check the choke shaft bushings and felt seals, if they are wore out, it'll suck air back in, and make it run lean.

Choke shaft?? Don't you maybe mean the throttle shaft?? Please if the choke shaft explain how because the choke is open when running normally so if the shaft seals leaked no big deal. Now if the throttle shaft leaked ya it could well suck air in and run lean

Is the engine warm or cold? If cold you may be running lean ,if warm I would first check points & condenser, then coil.

The others here have covered the fuel possibilities pretty good. I had a Oliver 1650 drive me nuts doing what your tractor was doing. I finally switched the coil and fixed it. It has bright blue spark checking it with a spark tester running but it must have been breaking down under load.
