Internationl money order from the post office. Make sure it's the International one. I think they are pink.

The US Post Office sells Canadian Money Orders I buy
tractor parts from a fellow in Canada couple times a year never had a problem

That depends on what its for. If its a purchase and the seller accepts visa or master card they take care of the exchange rates. Last time I did it, I think they charged me 2.50 for the coversion. I've also used paypal and US Postal International money orders. For that matter, in Canada, I've also paid cash in US currency and taken Canadian currency to my bank to exchange back.

VISA would be my suggestion if the person on this end accepts VISA. As noted the exchange is handled that way at redemption.
Failing that I guess I'd suggest an international money order....
