Just wondering if anyone had any pros/cons about a '72 JD 4620. Found one with slightly over 4000 one owner hours in above average condition with powershift transmission. Needing something to run a round baler and haul grain etc. We have 2 4320's, but never owned a 20 series any larger. Just curious. Thanks alot for any help.

I guess it is heavier, but doesn't have any more power, I know it is rated more. 4630 are almost as cheap and have a good cab, most of them have had the 4 pinion gears put in them. Also have a intercooler can handle the higher hp.

A 4620 is good tractor the early 4520's had some problems but the 4620's did not. It is a much heavier tractor than a 4320 which is great for tillage the front end is much heavier alot of 4320's have twisted up front ends. More cooling than a 4320 if you turn up the fuel it won't run hot. 4620's have a factory intercooler. The power shift makes it somewhat rare, most had syncro trans. Now the bad part 4620's only have 1000 rpm pto. We have a late 4520 with all the 4620 updates and really like it. It is our big tractor for tillage and a forage harvester.

If you have JD 4320s and like them you will hate a 4620. It is basically your 4320 motor on a lightened 5020 rear end. They are 1000 PTO only and are a gutless wonder. Your 4320s will out work a 4620. You can find a 4630 for not much more than that 4620 should bring. The collectors are driving the 4620s up in price. They where bringing scrap price just five to ten years ago.

Had 2 (both synchro) of 'em 'way back when'; I would NOT recommend them for pulling a round baler.

A lot like a 5020. Lots of iron, not so gutsy. They had a million places where dirt could get in the engine. Was a field update and I did a few of them. Tons of foam that had to be glued in place. I would pull off the air hose to the turbo to see if its dirty before I bought it.If so---PASS. Look for a 6030. A much better large frame older tractor.

I run a John Deere 385 round baler that makes 4x41/2 bales with a JD 2130 that dynoed at 62 hp, and can make 30 to 35 bales per hour at 6 and 1/2 miles per hour. A 4320 has to be at least twice the tractor as a 2130, so should easily handle any baler out there. My neighbour bales with a 5x6 JD 535 on an beat up 85 HP Ford 7000 without any trouble. I think a smaller, more nimble tractor like the 4320 would be better on a baler.
