I was wondering .. if you have anti-freeze down to -25 ... HOW cold does it have to get to freeze it solid ??
<>
I realize it will be different under different things ..
<>
I guess I always thought if you have -25 .. it might turn into SLUSH ... but not HARD ...

THANKS to anyone that would like to set me straight on this ...

Mark

Ya . if it says -25 it will probably get a little slushy, but it souldn't freeze solid. If it gets -25 you better put another blanket on the bed, BURRRRRRRRRRR. :)

I do beleive if it says -25 it will not jell at -25.If it did then you would be in big trouble when you start driving.I have once had a car freeze up once I got driving, didn't have winter front on soon as I went 2-3 miles it stopped heating, had to stop and let it thaw and drive slower to next stop for more antifreeze.I keep mine at -35/-40 now and no problems.

It will never get hard enough to break anything. The slush won't circulate & it may overheat if you are driving at a colder temp. If you put some weak anti-freeze in a glass bottle, it can set outside all winter in Mn. without breaking.

Hi Mark, It was 2°F this morning. I always mix my antifreeze 50/50. I don't think the weathermen have figured out this next storm. Suppose to be in the 40's on Tuesday & Wednesday. Could start as rain and then turn to snow Wed nite. I made a few bucks plowing snow off driveways. We haven't had any deep snow's so far like we did last year. I used the snowblower a lot last year. I've only used it once this year. The pup is really growing she's
was slated to be spayed, but she came in heat early. She's really good natured and plays with the older dog. Hal

Yup, All the cars you see pulled of the road in a cold snap with steam coming out the front? yeah, most of them had antifreeze but not enough. It slushes up in the radiator so they can't circulate and they overheat.

Camju, are you saying that by driving fast the antifreeze froze and by driving slower it didnt freeze? bill M.

50 / 50 antifreeze concentrate and water will not freeze until atleast -30. That temp and that mix are real common and work well in my area. (ND)
They tell me that you can go up to 60/40 or even 70/30 for very very cold ,like -40 or lower.

Oddly they say pure antifreeze will freeze solid at much higher temps.

It won't freeze solid. It may gell up a bit. A guy told me once that even 10% antifreeze won't freeze solid as long as it's mixed well. Dave

well when you mix anti-freeze 50/50 that mixture is good for -31F and is perfectly safe . have not seen it gel up either at that mixture. your - 25 will never freeze solid. if your in temps of like -40 it can gel up, meaning it thickens and wont ciculate. if you have weaker anti-freeze put a cardboard in front of your rad with about a 10 or 12" round hole cut in the center of it. this is so you dont get so much cold air being pulled into the rad by the fan. round hole in center is so that it is easy on fan and brgs in water pump, like if you had only bottem half coverd the fan will want to wobble as its not pulling air evenly.

Wind chill. That's why putting a gunny sack in front of the radiator (reduces the air flow) will help an engine warm up.

The charts on the bottles say that a certain concentration "protects" to a certain temperature.

I would hope that means that it keeps the coolant in a liquid state at that temperature.

The coolant in the radiator will have particles of partially frozen mix. This slush plugs up the rad core tubes and stops flow. The engine then overheats due to no circulation. Jim
