welder 230v vs 400 volt?

Hey folks,
Not very often that I have to weld something. I have a little 230volt stick welder now but it is a low amp cheapo for light stuff. Just saw another that works on either 230v (more portable) and 400 volt (says smoother welds and up to 7mm material with up to 4mm rods. I taught myself to weld when I was 12 or so and can do OK unless it's underwater or standing on my head. Think the 400 volt box will be OK?

hi dave " the 400 will most likely work for you.just keep in mind if its a ac welder only you have to be get ac rods for it or it will splatter alot and not weld as smooth.i have one at work we mostly use as a backup and it is ac only i use 7018 rods with it.

I'm thinking the more important question here is, do you have 400 volts available everywhere you intend to use a welder? Typically most farm/home services here in the colonies have only 240 volt single phase. I've used 480 volt 3 phase welders at work and they are awesome welders. But here in the home shops I have 240 volt machines a small 120 volt TIG for portable work and a 300 amp AC/DC engine drive for heavy portable work. A good name 240 volt welder would suit most any need on the farm or at home. Avoid the Chinese stuff.

I have worked at plants with 440 and at plants with only 230. Used the same brand and model of welders at each they worked just as good at either place.
You should be able to get a welder that will do anything you may want at the lower voltage.

My 400amp AC/DC Hobart has taps for single phase
240,480 and 600V.
Makes no difference to the weld as long as the
electrical supply and wiring can maintain rated
terminal voltage on the welder's input terminals.
Of course voltage drop is generally less of an
issue on what they call a 380/416V supply than on a
220/240V supply.

According to my little book, your 400V is 3 phase,
do you have that available where you want to weld?
As long as we are on the subject, is your 230V household current hot on both legs like in the US? I
tried to ask that question when we were visiting
Germany but with the language problem (I don't speak
German) I didn't find out.

The European 220/240V is line to neutral. Line to line single or three phase is 380/416V.
An US 440/480V 60Hz motor works well enough on European 380/416V 50Hz.
