I live in southern In and hats off to all you that live up north all over us and canada. I dont see how you guys handle this cold. We had 5" of snow here yesterday that is now ice. Needless to say had to take the wife to work this mornin and the bank sign in town said 3 degrees. farm chores gonna be a little chilly today.Pretty sure my 4020 is gonna be less than enthused about startin this mornin. forgot to plug in my diesel last night and it definatly wasnt happy about life when I went out to fire it up this mornin. Of coarse 3 might be a heat wave for some of ya. have a good day and be safe all

Just looked up International Falls Minn's temp. -38. I'm in northern Iowa so it's long ways north to Canada from where I live, but right now a tropical isle sounds real lucrative to me. Jim

Guess it must be what you get used to. We were 5 degrees Wednesday afternoon and it felt really nice. Sun was shining and the wind was not blowing.

South western Ontario isn't all that cold per say with the moderation by the Great Lakes. Makes for very high winter humidity which does "feel" cold. Also makes for snow streamers off the lakes.
I've had numerous people from Timmins, Sudbury etc. Say that -20F dry cold, little to no wind with sunshine was easier to take. Than 20F, 70%+ humidity, 20-30mph wind and grey skies Nov to March.

-35 air temp with a -45 windchill in central MN this morning. Got a little frostbite on my face this morning doing chores before off to work. Saw three vehicles in my 30 mile drive today.

Where i live(100 km east of the rockys and 1000 km north of the border) we usually don't get the cold and warm cycles like you get in the south,it stay's pretty steady below -15 c all winter long and the snow just get deeper.
2 seasons only.Summer and Winter.I got a heated shop for the tractor and a garage for one vehicle.
One learns to plan ahead for severe cold and does the chores in the warmest part of the day.
For the rest we drink coffee and hibernate.LOL.

There are some people around who lived here all their lives, who have the tractors and vehicles outside and for them life must be h3ll.Their yards are full of ext cords, booster cables and batt chargers and then complain about the power bill. But somehow they survive too.

I went to florida for a week to vist my parents. The Airbus A320 going down was full, 100+ people. The same plane going back had only 10 passengers. I asked the steward why so few folks? She looked at me like I was an idiot! then said "nobody goes to michigan in the winter!"

The changing temp here is definatly makes it hard to adjust. You might have a 40 or 50 degree day one day and then might be 20 with a 30mile an hour wind blowin. I think if it just stayed cold I mite get a little bit more use to it. I wish we had a heated shop. we use a wood stove in ours so its only warm when we are there. Id love to keep my superduty in the garage but its to long bein an 8ft bed and extended cab so it sits out in the weather and I plug it in when i plan on drivin it. Well except I forgot to last nite. Still started up but sure wasnt happy.lol

We"re on our way back from AZ, NM, two week trip. In Hutchinson, KS yesterday, schools were closed due to the "calamity" (their words), also one of two museums we planned to see was closed. They had a thin covering of ice and a dusting of snow. Weather guessers warned of bitterly cold temps, highs in the 20s. In NE now, near Warp Museum, renter in central MN emailed he had 29.5 below this AM. Local school is 2 hours late. Coldest we ever had was -44 in "Jan "92. Am really tired of watching weather channel from mid and south states, with reporters going out to show what two inches of snow looks like. Guess it"s all what you"re used to. Personally, I"ll stay with the four distinct seasons in MN, not 11 months of brown in the SW.

I think winter can be tougher for people living further south because it seems you tend to get more ice and live in areas less prepared for it. I live in western NY and every town is well equipped to move snow and people get used to driving in it after the first storm. It takes a pretty good snow storm to stop life around here.

Yep,it really wasn't too bad doing chores this morning. It was so cold, the ice on the silo floor wasn't even slippery. Broke the silage loose and loaded up pretty quick. Now,if it was 32 with that ice under the tires,I'd still be out there slipping and sliding.

We have sum equipment here in Indiana were I live but 6 or more inches will pretty well shut everything down around here. We definatly dont get the snow like you guys do and definatly dont handle it as well either. People around here definatly do not know how to drive in this weather either. All these folks who buy a 4x4 think they can still drive 55.

-33 here at 4am, checked the cows and lone behold overnight some one took all my red and black cattle and replaced them with white one's. Darned thieves!

I also live in southern IN. I guess I am a different breed I enjoy when the seasons change and when winter is among us. Nickg from what part are you from? But the winter weather we get here is no match for the northerners, so my hat is off to you guys. Everyone stay warm and be safe.

If you can do 55 you shouldn't be using 4WD. 4WD is for slow or off road use only. Shouldn't be used over 30 on a highway.

I just smile and letem go on down the road cause i usually get to pull em out later after they slide off the road and theh tell me well i dont know why i slide off. After finally gettin my 4020 goin I was goin down the road and had someone commin the other way drivin to fast and of coarse talkin on the phone. I just wonder who was so important to be talkin to and drivin in this kinda road conditions endagering me and everyone else

I live in southern NH. Leaving in a few minutes for northern NH with snowmobile. Planning to ride to Canadian Border tomorrow for lunch at a little restaurant there. I will have the gauntlets on my handle bars, so that my fingers don't get cold.

I hear you, JMS.

The electronic thermometer gives error after 20 below, so it was - ah, cold? - over nite, not sure how low. The minus 20 was before midnite.

Now, I'm kinda bundled in the house under a throw, so I won't claim to being too tough.... ;)

The preparedness for snow is the funny one, like you say, 2 inches and it's a horror, how will we deal with it? Here in MN I don't bother blowing out he driveway until 6 or so inches accumulate, everything I own is 4wd now.

you are in a good area nick ,, mom was born raised in ferdinnd, ind ..My 730 Case gasser has been doing all th feeding chores up this way ..you must have a gasser 4020 , my4020 diesels skinyazz batteries are not even 2yrs old and won't crank 30 seconds , so it sets,, i use e-85 half and half with gas and cover the grill to build engine heat,, my cows stay in the barn lot during the extreme cold ,,, never know when a surprise calf might show up ,, i think the hot summer heat got my bull out of step with the momma cows

I read someplace that summer in Minnesota this year is going to be July 6, from 1 to 5 p m. I think that we should all try to take that day off.

Actually its a diesel. I had some charging and battery issues when i first got it and I changed the generator to a alternator and kept it 24volt and so far so good. Batteries are on there fifth year now. Gota give er a littl squirt to get it started when its this cold tho. Ferdinand is nice country.Lota nice dairy farms up that way. I live about 45 min west of there. Calves always seem to have a way of just showin up when its cold like this. I dont really have many cows anymore. I only have three cows now, that we keep for our beef.

We just whine about it like everybody else. Luckily now days I can just pretty much sit around and listen to the furnace run. When it hits 90 in the summer is when we really whine.

No sense bit**in" about the weather "cuz you can"t do anything about it.

We"re fortunate here in the South Mission Valley that most of our cold weather doesn"t come with high winds. The feeding tractor is on a timer for two hours before feeding and it starts on the first turn. I put on insulated bibs and a vest and heavy jacket and go feed. I"m gettin" a little long in the tooth for an open station tractor so I bought a newer one with a heated cab and I"m getting ready to switch over to feeding with it.
if the snow gets deep, we have to plow lanes in the pasture to feed in and sometimes we put straw down so the cows can lay on it in real cold stretches. We have geothermal heat for our waterers so they"re pretty trouble free. Like the Boy Scout motto, you just have to "Be Prepared".

I think the folks who have it rough are the guys in Eastern MT, ND, SD and up in the Canadian prairie province where there"s nothing between them and the North Pole but few barb wire fences!

I wasn't talking about myself. I've used it on the highway once - when I had to drive home in a blizzard. And I was going about 25-30 m.p.h.

We're so tuff we farm barefoot in 6 feet of snow and it's uphill both ways! (according to my grandfather, anyway). Personaly, I prefer to whine about the weather and stay inside.

We got 3" of snow last week. Schools closed and the all the kids were thrilled. :D
Trouble is it only lasted a day. :x

Bright and sunny here, Oh sure the wind is blowing the snow around sometimes in near white out conditions. But she was cozy warm 50F in the dairy barn this morn, snowing outside, any comfy by the fire in the house till night chores. Winter is all right ,just 3 months too long!!

Your right, buickanddeere. I live halfway between Timmins and Sudbury, but grew up down near Kitchener. -20F here is easier to take than 20F down there. But as I get older I am finding it harder to deal with. Finally bought a tractor with a cab to do chores in the winter 5 years ago, now going to trade it in on one with heat!

I'm just across the border from International Falls in Fort Frances ON. We broke a record set back in the 1950's last night when the temp. dropped to -42°C (-43.6°F). And even though it warmed up some, it feels worse now because the wind came up some. It's now -22°C (-8°F) but now we've got some wind and blowing snow.........lovely!!! I'm gonna spend the weekend in my heated shop doing the body work on my truck, trying to ignore the foolishness that is winter!

(quoted from post at 17:06:57 01/21/11) I think those canucks are either really mean or just crazy. -40?? No thanks.

We're a tough breed so don't mess with us! Seriously it's what you get used to. Once it warms up past 50° it's tee shirt weather man!!

GordoSD,
Had the wife look that up this morning in the owners manual. It said not to exceed 45 mph in low range.Said in high range it would go the posted speed limit. This is in a newer Chevy truck.Kind of surprised me on that one.

My good friend pointed at his 80,000 dollar wrecker one day and said, pulling 4WD pickups out of the ditches on I-90 paid for that. He said if it was going to get paid for by towing front wheel drive minivans, he would be out of business.
There's no "differential" between the front drive and rear drive. Any difference in tractionsn due to surface conditions, or tire conditions, and one axle is going to take over and you're not gonna be able to steer the thing.
I'm not talking about the various AWD systems, just the old fashioned, hi low range, tranfer case trus 4WD.

If it stays one temperature it"s not so bad. The worst are the weeks that the temps are hovering around the freezing mark. Of course -15 with 40 km/h winds is just terrible in Ontario"s higher humidity. The biggest thing is staying out of the wind.

'nother thing good bout the cold is it keeps away those reptiles and fish and other creatures that can kill you just cause you walked too close to them or swam in their house. Gators and crocks , nasty snakes , sharks , rays , scorpions poison frogs and on and on. I'm sure you in the south are used to that stuff just like we are used to the cold. I'll take the cold...it ain't gonna EAT me!!
