Drill Doctor Bit Sharpener

Your question has been asked many times, on this
forum. Just go to "Search" at the top of the
page, and plug in "drill Doctor"

I have the big one that will handle 3/4" bits. They do a nice job till the stone gets worn. The diamond stones aren't cheap. The bigger teh drill the faster you wear the stone. If you use good quality drills(USA/UK/German/Jap etc) you will come out ahead using it.

If you buy Chinese drill indexes for $20 at Harbor freight/walmart/TSC, you should save your money and just buy more cheap drills.

Handier than a shirt pocket, from like 1/8 to 3/4,does a great job..based on operators learning curve.

You should learn how to sharpen a bit using a grinder. I've been doing it for years. Some new grinders have a grove built in to keep the bit at the proper angle.

I got one a few years ago, used it awhile and then went back to sharpening them on the stone. Some days I have the touch for getting them right and some days I don"t but the stone is a lot faster. Jim

Over the years I have had 2 or 3 of them still have at least to of them. Do you want one just come and get it and you can have it. I never could make one do more the dull the bit more so I just do the sharpening on my bench grinder

I love mine. I would reccomend buying the coarse grinding stone. It comes with the fine stone, and a large bit would take many (50+) turns to sharpen it. With the coarse stone it is much better. Once you get used to using it, it should only take about a minute to sharpen a bit to like new condition. Touch up every bit before you use it and it will cut through steel like butter..

Ok.... True story.... The Drill Doctor vs. the Drunk. A couple of years ago we were working on our fertilizer floater and needed to drill a bunch of 3/8 holes in stainless steel. We were going thru drill bits constantly, then I went and bought the "Drill Doctor". I can't say that its bad nor great. It took a lot of time to set and grind bits but they did work. Then one of our friends came in directly from the tavern, with a good jag on, and it goes like this. " Give me that sob, stagger stagger grabbed the 4 inch grinder, weave,.........weave some more, placed it between his knees and started grinding, (we were just praying that he didn't get a finger or something taken off),then he started to sharpen the first bit and the rest is history. The more he started to sober up the longer he took but every bit was sharpened to perfection. Drill doctor I believe was almost 70 bucks, a professional with a jag on only cost us a 12 pack.
We still chuckle at this every time we have to drill something.

Biggest problem with the DRILL DOCTOR is not all bits have the same twist per inch,so it can't sharpen all of them.In my opinion piece of sh!t,compared to hand and grinder.

first thing to do when you get one is take that top cover off and throw it away. Then you can see what happens when you are twisting that bit holder and only then will you be able to get it to sharpen right.

Buy a drill grinding fixture made by General Tool.Around 24 bucks now.Got mine in 1972 and had a simpler one since 1958.A Sears drill gauge will help keep the points centered.Ive found new drills ground wrong so study and old drill that is still cutting well. The grinding wheels on import grinders are trash, buy a Norton 100 grit wheel to sharpen your drills. There are good books on sharpening tools.Buy one,too many are stuck on free info from the internet.
