OT Welding Project

Building a set of custom driveway gates for our new place. Will share pictures once I get underway in a few weeks. Built a 16' table to use as a welding surface yesterday, wanted something flat that I can lay both gates out on. Want to be able to see them together for layout of the "art work".

Question, using all new mild steel, which always comes with some sort of coating on it. Not sure what it is? Milscale? Rust protection?

Anybody got any tricks to remove the coating and prepare for paint? Someone mentioned acid washing?

Of course sanding and sand blasting are options I've used in the past.

let it rust for a while, than wire brush it and paint it with por-15.
You'll never ever have to paint it again

Loyd,

What is por-15?... I have a steel fence to paint in Texas, and it seems to me that all is needed is a wire brush for some of the rust.

Consider having them galvanized.
A friend of mine is just finishing up a gooseneck trailer. He plans to have it hot dip galvanized. He built a 10K 2 axle trailer about 10 years ago and had it hot dipped.
Not a spot of rust on it yet.

Light sandblasting or maybe a galvanizing shop could dip them for you. I wouldn't have them galvanized though. If you're going to the trouble to make some fancy gates, why not have them powder coated the color you want. The powder coating shop would know the best way to clean them. Dave
