Must be too cold outside..

Weather says it's 18 F outside.. But it must be too cold.. 3 trucks, and not a one of em want to start this early afternoon..

I think it's time for different batteries in the one truck.. Jump starting is getting to be a daily thing, but according to battery tester at local parts store, nothing's wrong with the batteries.. But if ya cycle the glow plugs more than once and crank for more than 45 seconds she's dead as a doornail.. Just don't make any sense.. Once it ran during the day, will start every time with no problem.. even if it sits 4-5 hours..

Hope everyone's having a good Sunday

I thought the one in my 1020 Deere was done for. Last couple of times that I had used it loading manure,I had to jump it by the last couple of loads or had to drive it up by the door and put the charger on it while I was out with the load.
I ran it in the shop the Tuesday before New Years and tore it down to overhaul it. Went to roll it over with the starter after I put the pistons in befoe I put the head on,turned it about twice and went dead. Charged it while I was putting the rest back together, went to start it and it fired then the battery went dead again. Charged it while I ate supper, went back out and it started. Been using it every since and it's staying up. Don't know what's going on with it.

i dont think you can blame not starting on that weather, thats warm. when its-30 to -40 thats too cold.

I think next time the old Ford will get "big truck" batteries.. I paid about $90 a pop for these 2, and they're now 29 months old.. This crap started for me about the beginning of December.. I found a bad connection at the starter, and changed that.. Fixed it for a little bit.. I can get the big batteries from NAPA for the same price as these.. SO..

I don't know.. I'm gonna have to check the glow plugs, as the "cycling" has changed, and it's showing a sign of bad ones.. so one day this week I'll look into that.. which don't really change the battery issue, but if it hits on the first attempt, usually no problems..

My 85 Ford 6.9 used to give me a lot of trouble, but one of those new gear reduction starters made a big difference. Another thing I've been doing, when I get a few glow plugs burned out,I don't just change the ones that are bad,I change the whole set.

Check the battery wires. We have had several that had corrosion under the plastic coating. They got so bad you could not jump start them.

get your batts load tested, one bad batt will cause these problems.
I had one the other days,it still measured 13 volt but had only 100 cranking amps left
Batt was only 20 months old

I know you probably already have these but I think it's worth mentioning that if there are any of the clamp on quick fix battery terminals in the system ( I doubt it on your truck ) ditch them asap and put solder on ends on it with shrink tubing. If you have the side mount cables you can get new ends for them too. I had one bad side mount cable end on my diesel work truck that I was having the same problem with -unreliable starting even with known good batteries- drove us crazy ...cleaning the cable connectors only provided a temporary fix. New ends fixed the problem. Providing you have enough cable after cutting the old ends off to expose clean cable.

I had the same trouble with my 1715 N/H Started with new a block heater $27 at NAPA. then a 1000 amp battery $99.99 Plus tax also at NAPA. Was worth every penny. Thought my Glow plugs were bad but was bad battery didn't have enough amps to heat up glow plugs. Now I just plug in block heater about 3 hours before starting hold glow plug about 1 min and it starts like it was 90 deg.

Thanks guys..

I am pretty sure the truck needs new cables.. The ones on the truck makes the parts guy from NAPA cringe.. They're gettin worse, but at the moment I just don't have the $200 it would take to replace em this second.. (YES.. I priced it out.. nearly $200.. and if I'm gonna do it, I'm not gonna cheap on it)

The glowplugs.. they should probably be changed, but again, before I spend the money, I am gonna at least look into the situation.. They all functioned a year ago when I dropped the engine into the truck (but I know in a year's time one or more could be malfunctioning)

Once I got er rolling, it really wasn't too bad out.. I went and cut a load of scrap.. Colder today than yesterday, but sure didn't feel it.. Yesterday our wind was brutal. Tonight I'm gonna plug er in.. hopefully then I won't need the battery charger in the morning LOL

"While I ate Supper" I like that,my wife, bless her, and Diabetes Doctor sort of upset me when they insist on this " Breakfast,Lunch,_Dinner_" thing when planning my diet. I was raised in the country and country is what I am. For me dinner is around noon and lunch is somewhere in between maybe.
