aggravation/frustration.... tractor shopping

Guess I lucked out when I found my little tractor for 800 bucks (8 years ago). Same one now is 2500 up. . As I said before, more HP would be nice but want something I can work on, reasonable availability/price of parts, etc....

To get that, looks like something mid 70's and older (or a belarus ).

Folks here are awefully proud of older stuff lately.

Thought I had a couple leads on a couple deutz and a belarus for a decent price that turned out to be flops. Anyway, went onto a DDR (former communist east germany) farm machinery forum and asked a few?'s about belarus and a couple others. Got a couple tips on which belarus was good and which to stay away from. One guy offered a65 deutz 5005 with loader. Looked it up and it was perfect size wise (same width and a foot longer than mine) with 50 HP. Sent me an email with pics and details and a 6000 euro ($7900) price. Nice little tractor, but I just can't justify that much money. Most reasonable options if I can find them are the 36HP 4cyl versions of what I already have but between 3 and 4k euro ($3900-5200) Anything cheaper is pretty much junk. Really starting to question my need for more HP. Gonna put the front loader back on mine and try it another season. I've already bought my hay equipment to match it so it will probably be OK. Just gotta quit shopping.......

Done venting now.

In the northeast US, prices for tractors that age and that size are about the same. Stuff that sells dirt cheap in the midwest because nobody wants it usually has some sort of demand in the northeast, so it gets hauled here, but trucking ain't cheap anymore.

Tim that really isn't true about the midwest. In the last three years equipment prices have really jumped. Usually when I find tractors that are low houred and decent priced they are in NY and PA it seems.

oh man i know where you are coming from, looked and looked for my first tractor, i was about a week from just going to the dealer and getting a new one for the simple fact that I would know it's history,

but then the old man who had my tractor dropped his price by 3K, (us), we closed on our old house on Friday, and by 10:AM Saturday i was driving my IH584 to the gas station to fill it up,

turns out the guy i got it from purchased it from a family friend who had bought it new,

Tractorhouse has very overpriced tractors, don't think there for sale just fishing.

Hi DAVE. We read your vent on tractor price. Was wondering if it wasn't feasible to have a pal over here look for one and then forward pic,and have an inspection report done on the tractor. If price is right, then buy it and have it shipped. That is if it is cost beneficial for that project. Who knows, You just might end up with one like OLD UGLY.
Hope you find one reasonable, let us know/ regards LOU

Wife was quoted $1500 to ship a pickup from TX a couple years ago. That's an option but prolly wind up with the same money in it as buying here.

here's the 6000 euro baby... I like it, but it's not that nice. For that money I want something with a cab of some kind also.

I looked for a decent used unit for years. Finally gave up and bought new. A good used tractor was within 3K of a new unit.

Dave, did you try in the Netherlands,i got a neghbor who recently immigrated from there.he says older used tractors are worthless there.

Not yet, maybe Hendrik will chime in. Just got overbid on a belarus awd (like the one in the pic I posted). It went for 2600 euro in real good shape. I was kind of half hearted on the bid because someone said they had a lot of PTO problems and the tractor was awkward to turn around and maneuver. Also that the 4wd broke easily. What do you think? There are still a couple of 2WD ones available. and another 4WD a little farther away.

I've have a 2003 Farmtrac with only 450 hours 12X12
in western PA for sale about half of new price. Looks
new.
