Farm Auctions

What is the better season for farm auctions here in the East and
New England?
We moved to the south east side of New York near Kingston last
year, and would like to start going to auctions within a few hours
drive in any direction.
I'm interested in antique tractor things, and wife collects pottery
and garden stuff.
We're from Arkansas, and most outdoor auctions were generally
in the winter because the weather would permit it.....usually.
Summer was just too hot in the South to stand out in hot sun for
auctions.

Here in Kansas the best time is early in the spring so lots of people will come just to rid themselves of cabin fever. The other time is right after harvest time when they have money burning holes in their pockets.

Too bad you settled so close to NYC. Your 2 hr. range is still within the idiot range. The city folk drive out to the "country" where you live and pay mega bucks for an old looking thing of some sort to hang on their wall thinking that it is some "rare peice of history" In your area these peices have been sold over and over again in antique stores and auctions. If you travel north and west of Albany you might find a prize, but it won't be listed on the auction bill, it will be tucked in the bottom of a box and sold at the beginning of an auction when the auctioneer is priming the crowd and the buyers are picking up the auctioneers lingo. As for best timing to attend an auction in the NE, most are held in early spring and late fall when auctioneers can attract larger crowds of farmers who arn't working the land for planting or harvesting crops. Probably not a good time for you to get a "deal" though. Good Luck, I can't imagin why you moved to NY from Ark. and settled down state.

It's a crap shoot anytime. Neighbor sold out a year ago. Held off til April 17th thinking the weather would be near perfect. We had been in the field and had the oats in March 31. Temps had been near 70. Come April 17,it was cold, windy, just misserable for the most part.
I've been to sales in February when the high for the day was -2,but the sun was shining and no wind and the crowd was HUGE. You just never know.

You're right about city people coming up here on weekends. Weekdays isn't so bad traffic wise. It's a rural community. Lots of history stuff to look at.

We're hoping to set up our tent at the Canandiagua show in July. We've attended that show several times over the past 10-12 years, and always liked it. I have one neighbor with a JD collection of L's and LA's who says he has been to every one held there.

BTW, we moved from AR to NY for the weather. No seriously. Prolonged heat in the summer causes people to live in refrigerated boxes called houses. Reverse cabin fever. At least here there is about 9 months of decent weather in the North.

Biggest months for farm or country houshold dispersal auctions in upstate NY are April, May, Sept, Oct, also quite a few through the summer. There are a few consignment and dealer auctions held in winter along with occaisonal equipment sales at livestock sale barns on sale day. Winter up here is way too cold, gets dark too early in afternoon and too much snow to contend with to sell anything much outside. If there isnt too much snow , either way too cold or too much mud. If you are referring to attending the Pageant of Steam in Canandaigua, it is held in the beginning of Aug.
