OT Passing of the guard

My 57th b'day today. Mother, 85, called me at work to invite me to lunch, a bowl of chili w/crackers, which I gladly accepted. Daddy, 87, started bringing boxes and things in the room. He gave me his guns he's had for years. A Colt 357, a semi-automatic 22 rifle (don't know brand) that I used to squirrel hunt with as a teenager, and a Winchester 12 guage single shot shotgun that was given to him by his father. Said he had no use for them anymore. Happy and sad at the same time. Just glad to still have both my parents.

Seams you are blessed. Sounds like Mom and Dad had some "stuff" that they wanted you to have rather than your siblings, if you have any? I hope they live on and you are able to show your appreciation.

Congratulations on turning 57 and getting the gifts. Is the Winchester a model 12, by chance? Both my dad and I have old model 12, 12 gauges. Dad's is at least 70 years old and mine is a little younger. They knocked a lot of ducks out of the sky back in the day. I know dad was using his and grandpa was using the one I have when the armistice day blizzard hit back in the early forties. Dad said his froze up in the freezing drizzle so he could only stand and watch while grandpa took a couple more ducks down before the blizzard hit. Jim

Happy birthday! Be glad you got those items now.

When my great-grandmother passed, no one wanted to go through her things and get mementos (she didn't have anything of great value). We all agreed to come back in a month and get the trinkets that were valuable to us only because of the memories.

Unfortunately, a week later her son sold everything she had to an antique dealer for $500.00. No one got any of the precious little items that were hers.

Happy birthday. Go see your mom and as much as possible it means a lot to them. My Mom and Dad are both gone sure miss them. Have Dad's old 12 ga. Not a real collector gun, but it is one he had for years. It had wire tied around the stock holding it together. I never did ask how he broke it. stan

I just received all my dads guns when my mom just died. I did get a model 12 Winchester that i wanted. I carried that gun as a boy alot.

Spend as much time with your parents as you can. I lost my father back in 05. I can be working at the equipment barn and I still look up expecting to see him drive up. The treasures are nice but the memories are even better.

I went through the same thing many years ago, it's sure a time of mixed feelings....proud to have Dad give me some of his "personal belongins'", but it was sad too to know he felt like he was "about done". And now I plan to be "The old Dad" for my girls this summer. I'll be 77 and I guess it's time. I guess they'll wonder what to do with three pretty two cylinder John Deere tractors among other things, but they'll figure it out I'm sure. I wanted my two girls to have brothers but their Mama didn't so that's all I got.

Happy Birthday to David in Alabama from here. Stan, I'll bet that stock got broke when he ran out of ammo fighting off a bear, and he had to use the gun as a club! <<;-)

Happy Birthday! Good you got the things to remember Dad by. I remember when mine at age 93 decided he wouldn't need his old Allis B anymore and gave it to me. I restored it, really didn't take much cause he always took excellent care of it. I still think of him and what he managed to do with that little tractor when I walk by it in the barn. He had a box of old family phots and I begged him for years to write who was in them on the backs. He was always going to, but never did. After he died my brother and I had no choice but pitch a lot of them becuase we had no idea who or where was in them. I wish now I had been more insistent on him doing it when he could.
