Missouri assessment list time.

Don't live in Missouri, but have some vacant lots. Each year the Barry county assessor sends the list. On this you are to state how many chickens, bales of hay and anything else other than the wife and kids. I know of people to keep shedded anything not in use to avoid the drive byes eyes. See in the Iowa today farmer paper that a guy is trying to get the paper work stated for '12 to get rid of the assessor list. This just switches the shoe to the other foot and house tax will move from the hundreds to the thousands of dollars. Still have the same amount show up at the court house under a new title. Wonder if all the big round bales get recorded?

Can't remember how many years ago that they dropped the personal property tax like you're talking about, here in Illinois, but in return, they imposed a 3% income tax. I think it was originally supposed to be temporary, but then when it was due to expire, they made it permanent. Today I hear that they have bumped it up to 5% - don't know if that's also "temporary", not that it matters - it will eventually be permanent also.

I'd personally rather have the flat income tax than the personal property tax. And of course I'd rather have 3% than 5%, but no one listens to me. . .

I am in central MO. I had a neighbor, who has since passed on. He was a very devout Baptist. He told my dad he turned in about half of his cattle and everything else he owned.

Anything that requires a license we have to prove we paid property tax on it in order to renew the license. Even down to a $400 aluminum john boat.

A few years ago I figured out that one of my pickup trucks and my old IH grain truck qualified for "historic plates". Lifetime plates and I dont need a safety inspection.

So now they are "historic" autos. When I haul grain I pretend I am in a parade.

Saw on Fox news that IL had raised the income tax 66%, NO cuts in spending, NO pension reforms. Seems 526 govmt retirees will rake in 65 million in 2011 alone.

Yeah, that's true Gordo.

The elected officials are trying to demonize the retirees, like it is the retirees fault that the polit's failed to meet their obligations. They are supposed to match the employee's contribution, dollar for dollar, just like social security, but they have not done that for at least the last 43 years.

You or I would go to jail for defrauding our employees like that.

I'm suprised the retirement system has done as well as it has for being half funded for so many years.

The vehicle tax as I understand-is value of the vehicle-is taxed as if it was sales tax each year? now that could run into some serious money in a few years of ownership. Reminds me of a story Dad told out of Iowa when the assessor showed up to do the annual tax hoido thing-a dog was in the yard and the assessor wrote down that he had a dog Farmer replied that he did not know who's dog it is-so another assessor story. Short count is the rule of the land. In Illinois in 1970 this tax was dropped.
4000 buck is not unheard of for a low middle income house tax in Illinois.

I live in NE MO and like GeneMO comments. I have a 84 gmc pu and a72 gmc grain truck. I going to find out about the historic plates. I should have some
fun with that. In the past we've had reasonable assessors did not list every little thing.

Left ILL in 2000 and a $4378.00 tax bill on big house and 5 acres of rural hills and ravines at the same time. Now have a average house with 22'X40'X10' detached Garage on 1/2 acre in Az. and tax is $546.00.Suits me just fine.JH

Some of the people in/from Chicago are revolting. Miss the smilies on new forum, would give a hint as to the use of word "revolting" as adjective instead of verb form. Oh well, some people will get the pun. RN (10 years working in Chicago)

I grew up along I 90 in Ill , it was stated that it would be totally paid for in appox.10 yrs. That was about 1955. Still chargeing toll today.
What good does it do to have the Gov t.tell the public that things will be temporary? Truth in advertising? clint

yup got mine here on the table, luckly i'm down to 1 truck and 1 car, no plated bikes, and mabey a tractor, if i was farming cattle i can see listing every thing, luckly i don't see a place for golf carts,

i'dd rather see the ppt changed for a SALES tax, that ways all them tourist can pay for my stuff

Oh that reminds me of something,,,, let me see,,,, Oh yea. Isn't external_link a Chicago Lawyer? Let's see,, Lawyer,,, Lier???? And while on the subject of temporary taxes, The income tax was enacted in 1913 to support WWI and was supposed to be repealed at the end of the war. It was left and became permanent. The politicians to get the support of the people said it would be temporary. Well we see how well that worked. They just never repealed it.

Amendment XVI

(The proposed amendment was sent to the states July 12, 1909, by the Sixty-first Congress. It was ratified Feb. 3, 1913.)

[Taxes on income; Congress given power to lay and collect.]

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.

In 1894 it was actually declared unconstitutional and then in 1913 they did it is the 16th amendment for WWI.

Oh yes and the check's in the email.

Welcome to "THE EMPIRE STATE,NY".I think were in the top three in the country for taxes.Just got reassessed last year. Now they assess so called market value.Mine went up 63K.Thank god I live in the lowest tax rated county in NY.18 acres,2200sqft contemporary,24x36 barn, two 80yr old sheds,no road frontage(land locked)=$3400.00 a year(school and county)and that includes 10% veterans discount.I tried to fight assessment increase and they casually asked me if I finished that deck in the back of the house last year(that I didnt get a permit for)so I just backed off,LOL.

We had some family property south of Houston that had been pasture for many years. In 1998, the property taxes were $72. We were in the process of selling the property, so we did not lease it out and the farm exemption expired. The taxes the next year were over $3,000. All we would have had to do was run a few cows on the property to keep the farm exemption.
