looking at upgrading to a diesel truck. I know the early 6.0 was trouble but did they get better? I was looking at about an 05 or so. I appreciate any input on these as far as what to look for or troubles. Thanks.

yes some early had trouble, i bought a 05 new have 136000mle on it no problems ,pull trailers all time good power, good fuel econ.good tuck. i also bought my boys trucks, a 05 an 06. all 6.0 L, all run good.

Whether or not it works well for you, be CAREFUL what you pay for it as it's going to be REAL hard to get rid of down the road.

Even now it's sounds like they are REAL hard to trade off, lots of Dodge and Chevy dealers won't even THINK of taking one in on trade.

A friend always bragged he got one of the GOOD ones, never used it for much more than a "grocery getter", now he found out it's carpped out a head gasket. He's NOT a happy camper!

Nephew had a Ford 6.0. It got to where it started hard every once in a while. Then one morning NO START. High Pressure oil pump out, injectors bad and the EGR cooler was leaking. A $5000 bill at the Ford dealer. After it came out of the Ford shop It went to the local Chevy dealer where he traded it strait across for a new Chevy gas burner.

They don't have a good reputation in my area. A lot of farmers have or had them, but got rid of them for various reasons. Head gaskets, rear main seal leaks, and a lot of injector issues. They are a dime a dozen on car lots around here.

I have a 04 currently has 297000 head gaskets,a couple of injectors all under warranty. At 250000 high pressure oil pump went $800 repair. truck has original turbo, egr trans ect. oil gets changed every 6000 miles Has had a programmer installed since new. Almost always has a trailer hooked to it

Spitz NO they DID NOT get better. Here at the car lot we will not take 1 as a trade in. Boss is a 100% ford diesel person and he will not drive one.

My "company truck" is a 2005 Ford 4x4 with the 6.0.. I'm the 2nd driver since new (a lot of people from work have drove it, but the truck was originally assigned to the gentleman who retired, then was assigned to me).

It has to be serviced EVERY 5k or we hear about it..

The troubles I see with it are:

It rattles and carries on alot on a cold start (and not just when it's COLD outside..) It's worse in winter than the summer, but still..

This truck SMOKES.. I don't know why.. but it does.. warm or cold, it smokes to what I'd call an excess.

I do know when it was NEW it went in a few times for this and that.. seems like maybe the turbo was replaced, also had a ABS problem.

the truck has the 6 speed manual transmission, and had a "utility bed" and I think it gets right around 20 mpg on the freeway.

I have a neighbor who also has a similar truck, he said something about the head gaskets.. He don't take his to Ford, seems like he takes his to Navistar for engine work.. He said something about getting different head gaskets (made from a different material or design or something) and that it is supposed to cure the head gasket issues.. He claims that the ones Ford offers are different from the ones Navistar offers.. But, I think it's a case of I can tell you one thing and someone else can say something different.. You know what I mean, it's all in who you want to believe or trust.

I guess mine wasn't as bad as most, but I still wouldn't want another one.If you do buy a 6.0 you might look into deleteing the EGR and putting ARP head stud in it.

I have an '06 F250 6.0. Bought it with 25000 on it and now has 56000, don't want to jinx myself but has been good so far. most trouble i've had is with the brake calipers on the back not fully releasing and getting the pads hot. Like Allen says I think most of the problems were in the early ones, think later models had an EGR,injector, turbo upgrade due to reliability issues, could be wrong! Guess I'll keep running it until the wheels fall off nobody wants it so I hear!

I had an 04 6.0 liter diesel that performed like no other, and gave me no trouble. I have an 07 duramax now, that is reliable, but a dog. I have not made up my mind on the next truck.

I have a 05 with 85,000 miles on it. I just put new head gaskets and studs on and also a egr delete kit. I bought the truck used and because of the reputation I picked it up cheap. It runs great now and pulls well. I would buy a Ford again in the furure.

I don't understand why anybody would want a diesel pickup. It just doesn't pencil out. I own and drive a semi, and the last thing I would want is a diesel in my pickup. Gassers may not get the milage, but gas is cheaper than diesel, and maintence is a lot cheaper. Also take into consideration the extra wear on the front end, and a gasser will save you money everytime.

I bought an 06 new and have about 75,000 miles on it. Only time it was back to the dealer was for an oil leak that turned out to be a hose clamp leaking. The truck is completely stock except when it was new I put a water bypass filter on which I think sure makes a big difference. The first filters were awfully heavy when I changed them. The holes in the EGR cooler are small and can plug easily. I also change oil and filter every 5,000 miles and use only Ford filters as the filter sits on top of the engine and has a "valve" to keep the oil in the filter when it's shut off - some aftermarket filters are just a bit shorter and don't hold the oil. Also change both fuel filters every 15,000 miles (half price if you buy from IH) and clean the EGR valve every 15,000 miles. The best thing to check is get an Oasis report from any Ford dealer before buying. It it's had a lot of problems stay away. If not, you should be OK. I really like mine, but it has to be maintained and kept stock - no chips etc.

Quick, name an engine that cost the manufacturer $1,000,000,000 in warranty repairs (yes thats a billion). Yup, the 6.0L Had an 04 with a 6.0 and got rid of it in 06. Took a bath on it too. I hope it went to the crusher! Injector issues, computer issues, trans issues. All in 12,000 miles

I bought a F350 last spring and love it! It has the 6.0. Talked to the former owner and he had absolutely no trouble. It had 70,000 on it then and has 90,000 now. I have had absolutely not one speck of trouble. The former owner and the Ford dealer said maintainace is a must and definetly use Ford filters and DONOT chip it. It starts great, drives and rides great. Has plenty of power and gets 20mpg. I had two dodges before that and couldn't keep a tranny in them. Definetly Eord from now on.

The F350 that I bought is an 2006. I was told the earlier models had problems but anything 2005 or newer had the problems straightened out.

I'm a diehard Ford fan and the 6,0 is not worth the risk. The company I work for has an '05 F450. It starts great has plenty of power, gets decent fuel milage, and is absolutely going to break the company! EVERYTHING under the hood has been replaced at least once and some things multiple times. original engine didn't make 200,000 - Genuine Ford replacement [in 2009] didn't make it 40,000 and the camshaft grenaded. Every piece on it is like buying gold. I think the dealer is breaking it off in the company in a very bad way. No one in the company got a raise in 2010 because of the money required to keep this one truck on the road!! The bossman says Duramaxes from now on.

between the egr system and the exhaust these motors are soooo restricted on exhaust they just simply run too hot, IF i had one the first thing i would to would be to gut the egr (egr delet kit)and change the exhaust, one of my customer's shop has done several and it makes a total diffrent truck out of them

"regular maintenance is a must with these engines. "

Define (please) "regular maintenance" and what would that cost vs. simply keeping a gasser on the road.

I am convinced that some people will have problems with whatever they drive. I have an 04 with 189K on it and no major issues. Have a 97 with 320K on it with no major issues. JJ
