9N Tractor Color

Three Oaks

I have a 9N tractor we just inherited. Was wondering if the paint scheme is correct. All the castings are red and the body parts grey. I thought the 9N was all grey originally. Please let me know. Thanks

the "corect" color for all 9n's as well as all 2n's is industrial grey, all of it except the rear outer rims which were cadium plated, [silver] modern battleship grey is close, that being said most were given the red belly treatment either when new to move the last ones off the lot when the 8n came out or later to make it look more apealing, and for some people unless its a steel wheeled monster, a all grey tractor is, well, boring, to look at

As others have recommended, make sure it is indeed a 9N before you go out and buy paint. external_link in Wilkinson, Indiana has done a lot of research and have the "correct" colors available. Someone mentioned "battleship gray". That only part of the story. The reason the 9Ns were painted that shade of gray is that they got a whole lot of gray paint from the Navy after the Navy decided (back in the 1930s) that they had bought the wrong shade for their ships. US Navy disposed of the paint by offering it to Ford for a very low price. Ford accepted and Navy unloaded paint on Ford's docks. Henry Ford found out about it and countermanded the deal by making a ridiculously low price offer. The Navy took it and never looked back. When the new 9Ns came out they already new that Model T black wasn't a good color for a tractor because it showed dirt/dust sooner than any other color. About ten years or so later when the 8Ns came along the color/s changed to the tanish gray for the sheet metal and red for the castings. That proved a better color choice, besides, the old Navy paint had been all used up. Personally, I'd like to see them painted green and yellow. (;>))
