640 Ford Engine Rebuild

probably close, under perfect conditions, but its hard to give a acurate price on a engine rebuild untill the mechanic has the engine apart and mic''ed, machine work is very expensive and there is no way to tell how much is needed untill he's measures out the surfaces, also what if he pulls it down and discoveres a crack somewhere much more money

If you have a shop, do it yourself. Take the block, head, and crank to a machine shop that you trust and let them do the checks and repairs like valves.
The FORD shop manual (1955-1960) walks you though how to put it back together.

Mabey. Last I checked a Major engine kit for those things was in the 900 buck range but that's a few years ago. That still leaves you doing head and crank work if necessary. Head work probably will be necessary; crank probably not depending on how it was looked after. I'd wager that head work will run you 2-500 depending on what it needs and who does it... The major engine kit includes most gaskets, piston/sleeve sets, bearings, etc that are needed in the average major overhaul... so you may get out of it for 1800 if you drop the engine off in someone's shop. More than likely to be a bit more if you pay all labor tho.
