farm truck died very strangely

I have a 94 ford 4x4 with 300 six engine. Last night I had the charger on it for about an hour to top it off because I had been making many short trips across the yard without much time to recharge. So then started to take a little trip and the volt meter fluttered for at least a mile. I decided to put a load on it and turned on the headlights and EVERYTHING went dead. Every light, gauge and the engine just went off like I turned the key off. I turned off the lights and pushed the clutch a few seconds and released it and it started up again. I turned around and went back home and tried the lights a few more times and at first all was normal and it died one more time. After that no more problems. I have seen many things go wrong with trucks over the years but have never had that happen. Any ideas what I should check????

Thanks to everyone and God Bless

Check if your battery connections are good. Could be the ground or the hot one. How old is the battery? they can short out even if they are not real old.

Yup, sure sounds like a loose or corroded battery connection. Take them off and clean all contact surfaces before tightening them back down.

Check the charging voltage across the battery terminals to see if the alternator is putting out around 14 volts with the engine at 1/2 throttle or better. Use a hydrometer and check the battery's specific gravity in each cell and compare the readings. Should be around 1.260.
There may not be enough batttery voltage for your ignition. Hal

I have had that happen more then once of the years and most of the time it is bad connections loose belt or a bad alternator/battery any one of those can cause that problem

I Had a trusty 1989 Ford 150 with the 300. Your symtomes are a bit diff from the little quirks that mine had. # 1 it got to quitting every time I drove in a hard rain storm. Solution the pickup on the distributor had been replaced without enough "white greese" simple fix. #2 it had dual fuel tanks, and there were two circuit breakers on the firewall that powered the fuel tank pumps. I ended up carring an extra in the glove box. Other than that the 300 pulled like an ox and the truck never nickel and dimed me. I don't know what to tell you to look for, but seams you had a consern about the bat. so I would start there. Poor connections or grounding issues. I now drive an 08 Chevy Colorado. The heater fan started quiting and then running irradically. Problem turned out to be a poor ground on the heater controle board. What happened to simple switches and fuses?

I don't think it is the battery cables as it started up again. Pull all those push together connectors & see if one looks corroded or hot. Clean them up & try again.

should give it a special funeral, since those 300's usually live forever and this one died and came back to life and then died again.will it be cremated or buried?

Had a 91 with the 5.8 do something real close. Always started, but the lights would get real dim and kida do their own thing. One day, I got out at the pasture, got about 50 yards away, and the starter kicked in. By the time I realized something and got back it was too late and the starter was gone. Replaced it and never had any problems again.....

Not sure if it could cause your problem but it doesn't take long to check, in my 91, the ignition switch itself was mounted with 2 screws on the side of the column and can slide to adjust. Mine was really hard to start when I first got it (couldn't turn the key enough to engage the starter). The nuts had worked loose and the switch slid down. Put it back and tightened it and all was well (til the starter thing).
