I have always maintained that when I get an acceptable spread, I will have a Mail Pouch barn. It may be new, it may be a clone, but I want one. This one is back home in Jackson Co, WV. Not sure who owns it, but I remember seeing it as a kid.

This one is my favorite. Only about 10 miles from me.

Round barns are dangerous. Knew a man who died from a ruptured bladder when he couldn't find a corner to whiz in.

Round barn

If you click on round barns, PA, Fayette Co my grandfather built that one. It got out of the family. Dad got one "lot" of the farm, passed it to me, I built on it & live there now along with another lot I bought. Still home to seven yesterday's tractors.

Located about 40 miles north of us on M-66 in Osceola county. Was going by one day, and there were an older couple working around the farmstead, loading round bales into another barn. they showed us around (no puns intended>) the barn. Upstairs contained a grainery and hay storage. Said putting bales in it was a real "knee breaker." Inside was pretty open with no vertical posts inside. Downstairs was the stable, with cows facing in to the center, so all feeding was in the middle. Gutter, and track for manure cleanout trolley was circular around outer portion of the stable. The side picture with the "Welcome" sign cast in it was over a concrete watering trough. Said the origional owner got his wealth in the railroad industry, and when he retired to the farm, he had a round barn built, so he had his own roundhouse! Folks were real nice and friendly. We probably were not the first to stop and see thier barn. Course, it helped that wife and I are also farmers. Sent them some photos of our barn which has arched roof with hand laminated curved rafters. Lastr time I went by, the place looksed different, as though there were new owners, didn't stop and visit.

My Grandpa and I would go by this round barn when I was a kid.
Always told me the story of the man that went crazy. He couldn't find a corner to pizz in. Mark
Round

PBS channel from MN. has been running a show on barns. Some pretty nice ones, some round ones.

Always wondered what the economics were of the painted barns and Burma Shave signs. Was it a one time payment or did the landowners submit periodic invoices? And how much?

As far as I can tell, the painters never got a foothold into the New England countryside but there were alot of city buildings with advertisements. I removed a few with my 50" Skyworker, high-pressure water, and chemicals. Even sandblasted a couple.

There is still a faded Uneeda Biscuit sign in Lowell, MA and the City along with the National Park Service are protecting it. Probably go to jail if someone removed it.
