Gasket Maker

This is off topic as its for a snowmobile but I figured you guys would know. I need new gaskets between my engine and exhaust manifold for my polaris 2000 500xc. Gaskets are 2 weeks out and I need it tomorrow, they ordered the wrong ones. Can I use High temp RTV silicone gasket maker in its place? Or, should I use the old gaskets, a little rough, and some of the gasket maker with it? Thanks

Permatex hass a special gasket maker for that called Moto seal. Has a dirt bike on the package and it's orange in color. Dave

Whether your local NAPA has it in stock or not I don't know, but they do carry a metalic compression type gasket for exhaust systems that is similar to the OEM stuff used on alot of engines. Too they have a high temp "composite/paper" type gasket that isn't as good as the other stuff I mentioned but would work for a temporary repair. That said, I'd reuse the old gaskets before I'd try any kind of silicone sealer. On a typical exhuast setup like those found on motorcyclkes, etc the mate up isn't always perfect and a gasket is needed to make up the differences. Most silicone sealers aren't designed to fill in gaps but rather to seal the small imperfections on the gasket or mating flanges. So unless you have a really perfect fit I don't see any of them working as a stand alone gasket, especially right at the exhaust port where temps are the highest. Good luck.

I've used red silicone alone at the exhaust elbow of my JD D for over 20 years, no problem. This is a working tractor so it does get hot, and has not leaked. Best to let it cure well before starting the engine.

At different times I have reused the original Exhaust Gasket by wraping it several times with heavy duty aluminum foil, punching out the exhaust hole and reinstalling the gasket; the foil will reseal the opening and fumes or noise are renderwed cured. The latest unit I did this on was the Generac Generator set on my motor home.I installed a 1 1/4" Exhaust pipe in a vertical position running up the side of the MH to funnel fumes and noise away from mine and others living areas, works very well.I had to remove the muffler to cut the diffuser on the muffler and weld on a 90 degree elbow for this exhaust pipe.works real well.Only the most critical observers mention it mostly.

I work on some old small engines that parts are hard to get for. I have reused many head and exhaust gaskets by spraying them with "Copper coat". I hang them up and spray several coats with letting the last "almost" dry before the next. I have not had much luck with the red RTV sealer.

Make gasket out of tin and apply some permatex High temp RTV with copper. I don't think I would try any type of zaust cement anywhere near were it could Be sucked into the cylinder.... The RTV will in time turn into a powder, it acts as a lubricator tween the seal and parts.

For what it's worth I had a motor home that continually blew out the exh man gskts. (318 Dodge) Tryed asbestos gskts and metal gskts etc and nothing worked. Ended up grinding the face and installing them with no gskt at all and never had a problem again. I think the heat transferred to the block better.. EdBinOregon
