Coolant Overflow Bottle for Vintage Tractor

I found this in an antique store and thought it would make a neat coolant overflow. I paid $20. I figured on shining it up and mounting it behind the grill with the bracket that came with it. Anyone know anything about a brass Buffalo fire extinguisher?

Art's got it - that's an carbon tetrachloride extinguisher probably from the 1930's or 40's.

If it's empty, no problem. However if it's still filled with carbon tet take to your local hazardous waste disposal facility and have 'em drain/dispose of the charge. (Carbon tet vapor is a potent liver and kidney poison; it's also carcinogenic.)

Once the carbon tet is removed your extinguisher should make a stylish overflow bottle!

It is empty. It stinks. I was thinking about rinsing it out in the sink, but I am not sure how to disassemble it.

That's good that it's empty! The "stink" is probably something besides carbon tet. (Carbon tet has a sweet smell and evaporates easily - any trace of the original charge should have long since flashed off.)

You might try flushing a time or two with mineral spirits (paint thinner) or kerosene. Follow this with a good wash with hot water and dishwasher detergent then a hot water rinse.

If the extinguisher still stinks after cleaning I'd not be too concerned. Your cooling system certainly won't care!

There was one of those hanging on the wall in the kitchen at our old fire station when I joined in '73. it was still there when we vacated about ten years ago. During the 70s I suppose it ceased to be viable and just quietly and became a decoration.
