Seeding ideas

Reaching out here: the mine I"m working at has a tailings field about to be left alone. My boss is asking me what species to try planting in potentially quite dry, and extremely infertile condtions. I would compare it to the finest blowsand with very low nutrition and of course, virtually no media in which to grow. The soil, muskeg and organic matter was pulled from new tailings field to be spread over the area to be seeded. Ryegrass is the only species that survived the trial last summer when they hydroseeded with generic highway dept forage seed. Only cool climate species apply.

thanks for any suggestions

Jason, A few years ago my father was involved in a programme called "rye on the rocks" at Sudbury. The idea was to plant fall rye, let it reseed itself and continue until there was enough trash on the ground the hold some mosture and then spread red clover and sweet clover. After five or six years grass started to show up on its own. Hope this helps. Where are you? I live near Peterborough.
Chas.
