In lighter soils? Tractor will have duals, and inside tires loaded. Is the 4500 better than the 45 with trash? The 1206 is puttin gout approx 120hp. Need a bigger digger. Is this one too big?

We have found field cultivators do a better job with less compaction at speeds of 6MPH+ .Im sure it will pull it, its just a matter of slippage and speed I would think 24ft would work a little better. You basically get the same amount done if you go 6MPH with a 24ft or 4/1/2 with a 29ft and its easier on every thing.Remember our first 1206 and thinking what a beast it was, but look at how much things have changed in 45yrs.

Sounds like a load Dave if your gonna put the cultivator in the ground very deep.

I'm in lighter soils and this 32 footer pulls the snot out of my 190 hp with front wheel assist and 20,000 lbs.

I use to pull a 24' with 150hp 1086. That was enough also.

If the price is right can you take some off the wings or something like that if you can't pull it.

the 4500 wasn't much to start with,I owned one, the phasing valves can be a p.i.t.a. and the parts are expensive, a 21' Wilrich would serve you alot better

My 1086 at 150 hp has it's hands full with 27'. Sometimes I wish I had a 24' on her. A 21' might be a better match for a 1206. Jim

OK, maybe I need to look for a 21-24' digger, should I stay away from the IH's? I need something that I can hit bean ground and small grain, and once disked(or chiseled) corn ground, and be able to plant. min till is what I have been doing, but I ussually just hit everything with a disk, opposite angles every year, but I am learning that isnt the best tool for the job. Where ever I spread chicken manure, ussually onto bean ground, I just disk once, and plant within 3 days. Some of the fileds I have picked up have alot of ridges and ruts from previous renters and I want to get the feilds as level as I can for beans. They say you lose a bushel an acre for every inch above the ground you are.

I run a 24 foot er, 4600? - with a 135 hp tractor, that's about it I get low on hp & traction in tough going. Tho I do have real heavy soils here in south MN.

Moved up from a 22 foot 45, quite a difference.

In my part of the country with sandy soils a friends 1206 with 150 horses and dual 18.4x38's has all it wants with a 24 ft 4500 IH.He runs high 1st.

Way too big, even with quack shovels on it. Go to a ducktooth like 4-6 inch (tilling the full width) and you"re turning a lot more dirt- pulls harder. Better to slim down and run at a decent speed. Helps to get through wet spots as well. Later machines have more depth (ie, more space between ranks) and handle trash better- especially if you want to FC bean stubble. Renters late model IH likes to rip tires with the shovels- usually one or more per season.

As for which field cultivator is best.In my opinion its hard to beat a 980 JD .We had a new Quad5 Wil-Rich that looked great but no matter what we or our factory rep did we couldnt get it as level as a 980 so we traded it for a 980 and now have a 60ft 2210 that works great
