Tractor accident -too close to home!

My nieces father inlaw was run over yesterday by his tractor in a freak accident. He's farmed for years, in his mid 60's. He had his head and left side run over after falling off his Massey 285. We got a call yesterday afternoon saying that he was just airlifted to the hospital after his tractor was found running in circles and his head had been run over by the tractor.
Turned out he had been climbing off the tractor when his overalls pant leg hooked the shifter somehow, tripping him and putting the tractor into gear as he fell in front of the rear wheel.
The tractor had winter chains on the rear wheels and as he fell the rear wheel went over his head and left side. I found out today that he was airlifted right from the sene to a hospital in the Twin Cities. Had several broken ribs and 68 stitches, may loose an eye, internal bleeding and is not out of danger yet.
Thank goodness it wasn't his IHC 806 tractor.
Just saw him at Christmas, it can just happen so quick.

Boy I hope he makes a recovery, that is an awful thing, for him and his family, hope all can keep them in their thoughts and prayers.

It happens too quick, I find my overalls getting caught on the ford 3600 shift lever, could easily hang you up or worse, have to take ones time and use care always.

Today, I did not, I let the 3600 and NI 216 spreader fast idle to warm up, whils't I cleaned the spilled manure under the ramp, the other guy, our employee, friend and my coworker, kinda works differently, spills at the ramp every day, I clean it, really annoys the heck out of me, cause when I work alone there is no clean up needed LOL, well the darned thing tractor and spreader rolled back and into me, I turned away from it, should have shut it off and left it in gear. $#@%$#!@... as I got out from under it, dumb move on me, though I should not have to clean up after him nor would I have been there. The vet came about the same time, hey bud could you help me out from under this spreader ?

That aside, I sincerely hope he makes a speedy recovery, sorry to hear of this situation, a reminder to all, use care and take yer time !

Been setting the parking brake on my JD when I get off but these stories keep telling me to shut it down before getting off. Think I will let the starter wear out - cheaper to replace than a human life - mine!

That is terrible. Hopefully he recovers and is better soon.

Now I know why my Deere has a shutoff switch when I get off the seat.

This also has me second guessing the practice of letting tractors idle while I get off to mess with something. I always thought that the independent PTO lever on my Ford 3910 took minimal effort to engage. Once I was adjusting the top link, leg touching the PTO shaft and my dog jumped up on the foot board. Wouldnt have taken much for the unguarded PTO shaft to tear my leg off and/or kill me. It only takes a second.

I've come close to getting tripped up by the shifter on our 285 and 165 as well. Normally not an issue, but when bundled up for winter weather I can see where the extra layers would catch on things like that. Right now our 285 is down due to a coolant leak at the head.

Yikes, exactly why I put the main and range box both in neutral when climbing on and off. Knocked one into gear years ago.
