Okay gang, I did it now yall can laugh, but please not a HORSE LAUGH lol.

Its New Years Day and were at our sons in our RV in Memphis on the way to Florida so I says to him "Make me a video" This is the first and only take, I missed SEVERAL notes but what the heck I didnt hit too many wrong notes.

Maybe yall can name the 4 tunes??? Two are sort of Banjo songs the general publics probably never heard of. At my novice level of play theses are whats called Placeholder Solos in that I can roll through the chords and keep count but NOT hit ALL the right notes like a real banjo player could.

Lets see if anyone can NAME THE 4 TUNES

John,
Like the pickin, sounded good. Sorry I remember hearing before, cant remember names, least I can still remember my way home :)

Amen and AMEN!

Gotta tell ya John, this was such a nice suprise and is soooo darned refreshing! Someone who is doing it RIGHT and with the correct technique!

And here I thought I was gonna hear another ol' phart bangin' on a cheap little washtub instrument. You know, beatin'' on it like a roofer hammers in nails. :>)

But no, someone has put you down the proper road and it shows. Who showed you how to do that? Your boy?

I don't ever wanna hear another word 'bout you not knowing how to play. You're way, WAY better than ya think you are.

Don't ever stop, 'cause you have the "feel".

Allan

HEY JOHN ! You got it!!/ Enjoyed it all. I did hear WILL THE CIRCLE BE UN BROKEN. That is if my ear was right. Now my Question to you is, WHY DID YOU WAIT SO LONG TO PLAY FOR US????? Don't wait so long to do another video. Regards LOU.

John T, Sounds great. If I remember right you had just been playing a short while when we met in NY "09". You must spend a lot of time picking. I hope to see you in NY this summer.

I was sorta surprised myself as Ive never heard myself play other then bein right there lol. When I watched it I was trying to keep time but I really noticed my missed notes and the few stutters when I tried to hit n slide down grrrrrr. Of course when in a Jam the bass helps keep the timing and count

I took a very few lessons (been at it 3.5 yrs now) and that Scruggs 4 note forward roll I got out of a book but then An old friend who had played 50 years taught me to alternate BOTH my thumb AND index (index hits 2nd then 3rd string every other time) as it gives it more sound. The Thumb as you see hits the melody while the middle n index roll.

My son didnt teach me Banjo but taught me to "listen" to the rhythm when in a jam to keep time and that I didnt have to hit all the right notes JUST DONT HIT ANY WRONG NOTES

My son Chad has played 22 yrs hes the REAL Musician, he plays two back to back gigs tonight on Beale St in Memphis, Superior Bar 5 to 8 then Flying Saucer 9:30 to 1 Were gonna see him a bit but tomorrow we head farther South

For sure, Will the circle be unbroken is a bluegrss banjo standard, glad I hit enough notes you recognizeed it woooooo hooooooooo

John T

Yep, Will the Circle be Unbroken with what I think is correct the E minor chord thrown in lol

John T

That was Dooley by the Dillards
My Grandfathers Clock
Will the Circle be Unbroken
Banjo in the Hollow by the Dillards

Thanks for the kind words

I can't carry a tune in a bucket, but my wife has been playing the fiddle for about ten times longer than you've been picking. She prefers Irish fiddle music but is still working on sounding more like a fiddler and less like a violinist. Her friend's a darn good pianist too..

Er, Hey John,

I just went to your boy's youtube channel, clicked on the song, "I'm a complicated man" and got the meanest virus I've ever seen.

Does he know it's infected?

Cleaning a pc now.............

Allan

the Dillards played the Darling family brothers on the Andy Griffith show if IM not mistaken, and in several episodes they played Dooley!

OUCH, he left earlier, Im sure he had no idea, not sure if its a My Space problem or what?? Myself and a ton of folks have clicked on My Space links including his songs and just heard music???? Complicated Man is one of his own compositions and has to have been play often

Hope you get it fixed

John T

Hey thats FINE fiddlin. Now if she were at a Bluegrass Jam or fest, Id be askin for:

Ragtime Annie,,,,,,Soldiers Joy,,,,Ol Joe Clark,,,,,,Arkansa Traveler,,,,,,Cotton Eyed Joe,,,,and the Fiddlers national Anthem The Oranhe Blossom Special woooooo hoooooo

Them dern fiddlers like the Key of D n sometimes A

John T

Yeah, You got a good improvision on Will The Circle be Unbroken . Makes me want to get out my chromatic harmonica and see if I do the same thing. Nope, don't have a chromatic in E and I know I can't do it on my 10 hole Marine Band. You're sounding real good

Oh heck yeah,

Really. really enjoyed the song and his guitar.

A little research on this "Quick Defragmenter" virus says it comes in thru the back door while you're on the Internet.........So, I don't honestly know how these things work.

Hope it isn't his file!

Yep, reloadin' 'er now.

Allan

That's some great banjo playing, I am especially taken with those neat slides you put in. I play banjo a little but not like that and now I want to learn. It's nice to have such a clear video so I can both see and hear what you're doing at the same time. Thank you very much.
Zach

Ragtime Annie was always one of my favorites. And yea, banjo and guitar players can put the song in whatever key they want by moving the capo around but fiddlers are stuck with the four strings they have.

Banjo sounds OK but wearing a personalized hat proclaiming you're a lawyer seems a little over the top? Dave

Oh for Gwad's sake,

The man is opening his soul to the world, doing it from inside his own RV, freely and with a healthy dose of good nature.

You, on the other hand, sit there hiding behind your computer screen and critize his attire?

Yeah, I'd agree that there certainly is something here that is over the top, but it sure as he!! isn't the video.

Allan

Well, 4 days late, but I've found your banjo audition. Been away for a few days. As others have noted you are on the right track. YT band may become a reality.
