Where to buy berry plants

I am getting ready to plant about an acre of blackberries in the spring. I have never done this but I have been educating myself as far as my climate zone, care of the crop etc. I was needing some suggestions on a good place to purchase the plants. I have a few spotted online but just wondering if anyone has any advice. I live in western KY but I expect to have them shipped cause I see nothing real close to me. Thanks and Happy New Year to all!!

For that number of plants, I'd look for nurseries that deal with commercial orchards, not the ones who put out the slick brochures geared towards the homeowner. It's been awhile since I was in the business (peaches), but there used to be a BUNCH of nurseries near McMinnville, TN.

Try Double A Vineyards, Inc. www.doubleavineyards.com I have used their products for years. My order arrives on time and in good shape for planting. I have several Ac of wine grapes and 500 Currant bushes. There prices are OK and transplanting losses are low. Good Luck Ed

The two I have had really good luck with are : Norse Farms out of Deerfield MA, and Blue (something/ mountain ?) out of Arkansas, especially for the Kiowas (blackberries not black raspberries) (very large and hardy)

Norse is a leader in retail/wholsale Strawberries also... I live real close to Millers in Canandaigua, NY and their quality, service and pricing cannot even come close to the above mentioned nurseries. good luck

Hope your blackberries turn out as well as ours have. Neighbor lady gave us three plants a couple years ago. The first year they bore they made about twelve gallons. This past year they made about twenty gallons. Thats a lot of berries for three plants. Think they are Black Satin variety. We live in western Ky too, near Hardinsburg.
Good luck, Joe

jgp Did you ever know a fellow that was a Massey tractor service rep then latter in life worked for KUBOTA from ther in Hardinsburg. His name was Dewight Whitehead..? O to keep this on thread we dorve 130 miles east up around McMinville Tenn and purchased black berry and blue berry plants. Saved big bucks by driving up there. Supposed to be the nursery captial of the usa there in Mcminn county Tenn.

Check out simmonsplantfarm.com....... Mountainburg Arkansas ....They have the Kiowa blackberry and more.I recomend them 100%.I have been a satisfied customer.

Thanks for the many suggestions. I will check them all out. I appreciate it. I didn't want to start my venture by getting off to a bad start with the initial purchase. This is new to us but I think it will be a good thing. happy New Year!

730 Virgil: Millers is not a very good place to buy stock !!! Quality is not good and they do not take care of the variety or inventory selection as most do. As for Blueberries I don't think you can beat the two I mentioned. Kiowas will do fine in your neck of the woods also. Here in UPSTATE NY they are not that winter hardy, and some winters cause considerable loss. However, with berrries as long as half dollars and with great flavor I have continued to keep a good stand. The ones that do well here are Illini Hardy . Great luck with winter hardiness but nowheres near the size of kiowas.

Old Texas: That is the Arkansas outfit that I sort of misspoke/mentioned above. Great folks to talk to and deal with and deal in both retail and wholesale sales.

From year to year their selection is outstanding and if you call them they will give suggestons as to zones/varieities and what they are testing at the farm. Great folks and great products.

Call and ask for a catalog and then call for input/research. Good luck.
