For all of my VET"S:FRIENDS
If a persons gets kicked out of the army on a chapter 5 or 11 undesiriable from AWOL,and bad checks and he has been out of the army for at least 6 years, and has been in the NAT.GUARD for 4 years and went AWOL for 30 days, can they get back in the army and still keep his rank as an
E-6.

MANY THANKS

Have them talk to a recruiter. It will depend on their mos on how bad they need them. I doubt if he will retain his rank. Hal

I would hope that the Army does not want him. Why do some people think that an individual who cannot perform satisfactorily in military or civilian life is fit to serve? He should have been reduced from his Staff Sergeant position because of the AWOL.Why did the Guard take him? I had in a total of 12 years when I made 6

I sure hope not.

This man is a dishonor to the Uniformed Services. And clearly hung himself everytime he's cut some slack on the rope. Why bother wasting my taxpayer dollars for a man that has no bearing?

What El Toro said, but I wouldn't count on it. My grandson has been trying to get in, and with the economy the way it is, they're up to their eyeballs in recruits and can take just the cream.

I can't see them taking somebody that has a history like that at all, much less letting the dirtbag keep his stripes.

Don't imagine, but it depends more than it should on what color he is.......Sure you are getting the whole story? Hard to believe an e6 still being an e6 when discharged for either offense, let alone being in the NG with the same rank. I see a lot of NCO's daily that wouldn't make a pimple on the a$$ of the privates they lead. Times have changed.

This is kinda OT to your topic but my recruit platoon at Parris Island in '65 had an Army E-5 transfer. He could only come in as a E-1.

I seem to recall that USMC re-uppers would lose one or two pay grades if they signed up between 1 and 30 days after discharge. After that, they would have to accept E-1.

No idea what goes on now-a-days but I am sure it is searchable at Google. Things change. My MOS (0141) disappeared about 40 years ago when the small echelons got computers. Shortly after that, the replacement MOS's were yanked out of the Rifle Companies and went to the Battalion H&S Company. Authorized company manpower dropped from 206 to 175. Other MOS's must have been moved too. At least they still wear, more or less, the same uniforms.

Wouldn't it depend on the type of discharge? I assume if the discharge was "less than honorable" (Bad Conduct or Dishonorable), there's no way he could have gone into the National Guard. So he probably has an General discharge, which is honorable. The Army is desperate for troops; I suppose it's possible for him to return to the regular Army.

Here's an article on discharges.
Types of military discharges

Not a chance in Hell of him getting back in. My son screwed up his time in the Navy. AWOL and some other problems. Tried to reenlist no one would take him in. He has a general discharge. But depends on his records if he can get back in.

Depends. He received a document called a DD214 upon his active duty discharge. Somewhere on that document is an "RE" code, literally a reenlistment code. I forget which ones won't let you back in, I think a "1" is for honorable, 2 general, etc. It can't be too bad or the National Guard wouldn't have let him in. The bigger issue is his latest transgression, the AWOL from his deploying NG unit. If he was on active duty orders, they may have pressed UCMJ charges against him. Whenever he leaves those orders, if he hasn't already, he'll receive a new DD214. Don't know if it will have an RE code on it. If it does, it's probably not good. If he wasn't on active duty orders, his state NG organization may have pressed charges using their state's version of the UCMJ, probably wouldn't be known to the active duty if he tried to reenlist with them. Bottom line-he has to go see a recruiter sometime.
