Scout clutch?

I bought a 1970's Scout this fall w/ just 24K miles on it. The truck is in good shape & I use it regularly for chores. Today was my 1st time plowing snow for a long time. The truck did GREAT, I never got stuck...but, after a coup[le of hours of plowing, I could hear some clutch chatter....I could hear it w/ the clutch in or while in gear, not loud, but, detectible....it still plowed great & I didn't notice any trouble shifting or loss of power...is this "typical" for these Scouts or do I need to adjust my clutch?

My experience with IH's from about 1960 on is that they have a hydraulic clutch. So the best bet is to first make sure the slave and master cylinder aren't leaking; then bleed the system, to make sure you're pushing fluid [non-compressible] instead of air [compressible] when you step on the pedal.

THEN you might look about any adjustments for wear.

The wear adjustment is right on the rod end of slave cylinder. First do as other poster says top off the clutch side of the master cylinder then maybe bleed the slave cylinder. Get some one to take their hand and slowly go down on pedal stand and watch right down beside the motor see when the lever goes to move. May need to adjust the free play. Lots more labor cost in replacing the clutch than parts cost.

I wonder if it has a greasable throwout bearing ? If so grease it. If not then plan on replacing it sometime.

Scouts do have some quirks. Sounds more like you need to adjust your clutch.Or could be time to replace it. As far as a hydraulic clutch Ive owned four scouts. a 71 scout 800 a 75 scout II a 78 Scout II and a traveler. 3 of them were four speeds. No hydraulic clutch in any of them.

Nick :Are you saying your 78 scout II did not have a small little like a brake cylinder on the side of the bell housing that activated the clutch lever.. We are not talking about an inside donnut lif the ford f 250 set up but my 78 scout II has seperate master cylinder and slave cylinder. Just wondering is some have manual rod from pedal to clutch?

The hydraulic clutch was used on the older 80s and some of the 800s. Lots of issues with them when they get old and ragged and they are expensive to replace (a slave cylinder off a forklift of some kind is the cheap replacement unit).

I'm only familar with the 80s and 800s and the last of them (later 800s all the 800Bs) did NOT have the slave cylinder set up - IH went back to it after dropping it?

yep. Now weather it had an earlier built 4 speed swapped in and I didnt know it my 78 didnt have a hydraulic clutch. Now a neighbor he had a 80 scoutII and was hydraulic clutch.
