Synthetic oil compatability to fossil oils

Accidentaly put a quart synthetic in Ford with regular oil. Waiting to see what happens. Dumb things happen. Dave

nephew added some synthetic to my 430 case hydraulics , he had 430 at his place , added 3 qts synthetic because it was low ,,, so far , so good , and no harm , just wonder if i should worry any AT ALL? ,and or change out ,, .. He claims OIL is OIL! and is harmless mixing , I want to agree , but not sure ..

Usually but.........Pouring some synthetic into a tank of mineral oil does not make the blend as good as pure synthetic.
The synthetic blend oil you see marketed. is just to sell some synthetic oil to people who would otherwise purchase 0 synthetic oil.

As far as i know, synthetic oil is normal fossil oil, just more refined.
IMO It won't bite each other

i have been told by oil companies that it doesnt matter if you have 1/2 syn half dino or what ever as long as its both 10-30 etc or what ever your just fine

Cheap stuff is re-labeled mineral oil such as Castro oil.
Real synthetic oil made from esters is different stuff than rotten dinosaurs bodies.
Walk into a Mobile 1, Amsoil, Royal Purple or Lubrication Engineers lab saying there is "no difference". Would catch you a blast of wrath in both ears.

Mobil says no problem mixing either ester based or hydrocracked mineral synthetic with mineral oil, although you lose some of the advantage of 100% synthetic.

I don't know about a hydraulic system, but they can be mixed in an engine. Synthetic oils are not made from a petroleum product, but rather a man-made product. There are different "levels" or classes of synthetics. Not all synthetics are the same. Hope this helps. Gerard

I used to have a job running a "chickenbine" for the local chicken factory. It had to have synthetic hydrolic oil. We blew a line one night and the shop didn't have any more hydrolic oil so our boss went to wal-mart at 2am and bought about 20 gallons of cheap UTF. By daylight every O ring on the dang thing was leaking. He learned that it had special O rings that normal fluid would eat up.

This contraption has been the only thing I have ever been around that used synthetic do I don't know what put'n synthetic in something made to run on normal oil will do.

Dave
This is the chickenbine I ran

(quoted from post at 04:59:38 12/27/10) can they be intermixed with fossil oils in a hydraulic system? .

The molecules are engineered all the same in synthetic. Crude oil molecules are of different sizes.. To make crude better it has to B refined. Think of the molecules as ball bearings,,, if they are all the same friction is reduced, everything rolls free.. If they are a mix some will jam again each other...
A blend is a refinement to engineer the molecules all the same plus a engineered additive package... I use synthetic bleeds and they are far better than any crude... High mileage oils you see advertised are synthetic blends.

This is how I red'it... Don't see were a mix is gonna do any damage..

I watched a show on the tube,,, fossil/crude oil comes from plankton die'n and sink'n to the bottom of the ocean,,, I spec you could Google it...

If it isn't okay to blend synthetic and dino oil, then explain why you can purchase "blend" oil off the shelf at Walmart.

I suppose all those bones and fossils are fake. There was a lot of something organic that decomposed into oil. You can look in peat and coal fields and find plant fossils.
I believe the good book but I also believe that a lot of info was left out for one reason or another.

Most good synthetics (like AMSOIL) will blend without any issues. Synthetics will tend to clean out the motors. The only thing you need to watch is the old hemp gaskets (pre 1960's). Synthetics don't always play well with those. Otherwise you should have no issues mixing (mind you keep the proper viscosity ect ect).

no. its the additives, not the oil that has problems with cleaning and gaskets.. Good hd additives in both types of oil will do it. hd oils have acid fighting "base" or alkali materials added to them. This alkali material will super clean the engine.. It will also remove silicon from some gaskets. The cleaning action will expose the pores in the gasket material and then you will have leaks everywhere in some cases with certain gaskets. hd oils have a setting of 11 on the base-acid scale. Water is considered to be 7 or half way from acid at 1 and base at 14. Next time your at a machine shop, ask the to see what they put in the vat to clean engines.. you will be surpized to find out its not acid, it an strong alkali material much like drano you put in your pipes to eat away all the grease and hair.

James Mc Canney says it came from a dirty comet. If they find oil on the moon, then we will know for sure. No way it could all come from animal life.

I dont know about hydraulic oil.I would say that you are always better off to use the right oil.Mixing oil can be bad.
Back in the 1980s I was a truck mechanic and a couple of times somebody mixed synthetic with regular transmission oil and it knocked all of the bearings out of the transmission. The mixture got inside of the oil holes and plugged them and in a short amount of time ruined the bearings. So those old synthetics did not mix with gear oil.Whatever you do,I would think that you should use all of one kind of oil.Part mineral and part synthetic is probably always going to be trouble.

Hate to tell a man he is wrong but you are not even close Bison. True Full Synthetics have a whole lotta man made stuff put into them. Dino oil has a whole lotta stuff man takes outta them.

i certainly don't believe in dino oil,99% of dead animals get consumed by others,i never seen a puddle of oil under a pile of cow bones.

Teddy, I'll take the opinion of thousands of geologists who make a living exploring for oil over the crackpot theories of one fruitcake. If this James McCanney knows something they don't, maybe he should go into the oil exploration business.

Not even logical with the cow bones line.
To breakdown bio-matter into "oil". The matter has to be exposed to heat, pressure in the absence of oxygen. That isn't a dead cow in the back pasture field.
